Sharper, clearer vision at the prime of life

Image
Although it is said that “life begins at 40,” many people still dread reaching the so-called prime of their lives. This is the time when undesirable physical changes start to appear. One of the most telling signs of being 40 is the beginning of eye problems like presbyopia or near-vision blurriness.     But do people really have to suffer poor vision as they age? Top actor Piolo Pascual does not think so. Piolo, who recently turned 40, continues to charm audiences on the silver screen and television with his expressive eyes, which light up in romances, pierce through rivals in action-thrillers and brim with tears in dramas. Piolo emphasizes the importance of taking care of one’s health and ensuring and protecting clear eyesight. For people who enter their 40s and start to experience near-vision blurriness, he recommends having the eyes checked regularly. He says that the key to keeping the eyes healthy midlife are prevention, protection and correction. He r...

How sleep is key to living a better life

Image
Why sleeping gives you a better chance of enjoying your waking hours (Photo caption:    The  Sleep Soundly, Nurture Life  series of seminars visited key offices in the Metro to educate employees about the importance of sleep in their busy lifestyles.) When it comes to sleep, we always hear the range of seven to nine hours as the recommended average for adults.  According to figures, however, 60 percent of individuals never reach this goal due to different factors, a trend that can wreck havoc on health and overall lifestyle. One of the most commonly pointed factors affecting sleep is work-related stress. According to a study that highlights the direct effects of work on individuals, 33 percent of the participants identified lack of sleep as an effect of stress. This subject is what Uratex tackled during its recently concluded office tour that focused on the importance of sleep and its impact on overall wellness. The campaign, called “Slee...

Fisherman’s Friend: A Story of Heritage and Innovation

Image
How a brand kept in touch with the demands of the present market What makes a product’s credibility and success? Is it the number of years it remains strong in the market? Or is it the brand’s willingness to keep up with the times and demands of its consumers? For Fisherman’s Friend, ticking all these requirements is what made them strengthen their foothold in the industry, all while being rooted to their rich heritage dating back centuries. The brand, which is one of the leading throat lozenges in the market, traces its history back to 1865 when Fleetwood pharmacist James Lofthouse thought of creating a menthol and eucalyptus liquid to provide relief to fishermen who are constantly plagued by the hostile conditions of their job. After realizing that it can be challenging to consume liquids while riding the choppy seas of the North Atlantic, Lofthouse decided to create a lozenge form of his product to make it easier to consume. From there, Lofthouse decided to expand his...

Kevin Chung looks to seize opportunity of a lifetime at ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD

Image
Kevin “Old Boy” Chung may be a fresh face to ONE Championship, but the promotional newcomer showed his immense talent and had an impressive debut this past June. The 24-year-old Korean-American standout kicked off the main card of ONE: LIGHT OF A NATION with an exciting performance, defeating Chinese grappling ace Zhong Qing Ya via second-round technical knockout in their catchweight contest. Chung got the job done in the second round, where he landed crisp punches and kicks from side control, and when Zhong turtled up, “Old Boy” took advantage of the position and delivered a pair of knees to the head. It was all over from there as veteran referee Yuji Shimada stepped in and called a halt to the bout to award the stoppage victory to Chung. Chung is taking the greatest risk of his budding young career in his next trip to the ONE Championship cage as he has an opportunity to establish himself as one of the premier bantamweights under the promotion’s bann...

Danny Kingad balances life as college student and world title contender

In a typical Filipino household, parents encourage their children to exert effort in their studies to have good grades on their report cards in order to eventually have a bright future. When parents talk of a “bright future,” they refer to white-collared professions like donning a white medical gown with a stethoscope in hand, wearing a business suit in a corporate setting, or holding a blueprint on a high-rise site with a hard hat. However, the story mood takes a dismally sharp turn when a child opts to instead wear four-ounce gloves to compete in three to five-round bouts for cold cash. Prizefighting does not require an educational background, which is why most people connote a social stigma to it by assuming that all it takes is hard guts to endure the punishing blows inside a ring or cage. On the contrary, homegrown Filipino talent Danny “The King” Kingad is bent on breaking the stereotype to prove that not all professional competitors fit into thi...

The fans at the iconic Thuwunna Indoor Stadium will be entertained by the flamboyant flyweight Toquero once more on the undercard of ONE: HERO’S DREAM when he takes on highly-touted Chinese prospect Ma Hao Bin. The 36-year-old Filipino veteran lost two of his scheduled bouts in 2016, yielding to reigning ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano Moraes via first-round submission in March before tasting the same fate at the hands of Team Lakay’s Danny Kingad in December.
