Readers aren’t the only ones who noticed Chi’s flair for writing. The Manila International Book Fair, the biggest book fair in the Philippines already in its 33rd year last September, made sure Chi was on board as one of their first-ever endorsers, dubbed “MIBF Bookworms”. During the book fair, Chi joined social activist Carlos Celdran and fellow comedian-authors Ramon Bautista and Tado Jimenez in an online video campaign to promote literacy.

One Pogi Points pointer says, “Kung dinaan mo sa personality ang isang babae, para mo naring sinabi na pangit ka (If you use your personality to win over a girl, it’s like saying you’re too ugly [to do it any other way])!” Aside from tips on how to score more pogi points, the book contains photo comic strips, serious relationship facts, fun pogi trivia, and self-help lists. It’s a workbook of sorts for the love-struck guy who wants to have fun while decoding the woman he fancies.

Readers get a good dose of laughter from Pogi Points – and who knows? Maybe the single guys might even get a girlfriend.

Run United Marathon

 

Run United Goes the 42Km Distance

There are marathons, then there's the Run United Philippine Marathon (RUPM). Everyone is excited to participate in newest addition to the country's running calendar that will go on a debut run on October 28.

Finally, one of the most-popular running series, Run United is going for a full marathon, as it added 42km to its race categories. And the running community is giving the new 'mary' in town its full support.

Unilab Active Health (ULAH) and partner race organizer, Runrio, are certainly pulling out all stops to make the first ever RUPM running success.

"The runners clamored for a marathon from us and we also believe that Run United enthusiasts are up to the challenge of finishing a marathon already, so it's all systems go for Run United Philippine Marathon," said Alex Panlilio, head of ULAH.

RUPM, besides being the first marathon jointly organized by ULAH & RunRio, is set to create milestones for participants.

Runners will surely get a memorable start and finish at Run United Philippine Marathon--complete with red carpet, marching bands, exclusive finish arc, colorful balloons, video/photo shots, and the other surprises.

"We want to make sure that participants will not only remember how well organized our events are, we want their participation in our events memorable too by providing them the best race experience possible," said Panlilio.

According to Panlilio, "We cater to all types of runners, including progressive and elite runners. RUPM is our way of helping them level up to more challenging distances."

RUPM will also be high on nationalistic touches to celebrate Filipino sportsmanship. Philippine miniature flags will be given to all participants crossing the finish line. The design of the limited edition race singlet also depicts Filipino pride.

There will be separate categories for Filipino and foreign winners, to give credit or recognition to more runners.

The Unilab Active Health Village will also be part of the Run United Philippine Marathon experience. It will be classified in four categories: Active Kids Zone, Health, Sports, & Leisure, Runners’ Lounge and iConnect.

RUPM will also feature short and medium distance categories— the Ceelin 500m dash, Hydrite 3k, Dolfenal 5k, Enervon HP Recovery 10k, Alaxan FR 21k with the highlight, Enervon Activ 42k.

All categories except for 42k and 21k will have start and finishline at the SM Mall of Asia while 42k and 21k will start at Bonifacio Global City and finish at SM Mall of Asia.

42K runners will get to run in three cities: Taguig, Makati and Pasay

Run United 1 on March 4 started off this year’s RunRio Trilogy, followed by Run United 2 on June 17. Besides the run races, Unilab Active Health also has a triathlon series, the third leg, Tri United 3, will be held on November 11 at Ayala, Alabang.

Twentieth Century Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios have acquired rights to make a feature film based on the late Charles Schulz’s beloved and iconic “Peanuts” franchise. The agreement is the culmination of over two years of discussions – focused on the film’s creative direction – between the Studio and members of the Schulz family.  The announcement was made by Vanessa Morrison, president of Twentieth Century Fox Animation.

The as yet untitled animated event will be released on November 25, 2015. 2015 will mark the 65th anniversary of the debut of the “Peanuts” comic strip and the 50th anniversary of the landmark television special, “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

Charles Schulz drew the most popular and influential comic strip of all time, which was read everyday by 355 million people in 75 countries. In addition to the famous strip, Peanuts holiday television specials such as “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” have won Emmy’s and continue to be among the highest rated prime time TV specials.

Steve Martino will direct the “Peanuts” feature; previously, he brought to the big screen (with Jimmy Hayward) Fox/Blue Sky’s “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!”  and the recent box-office smash “Ice Age: Continental Drift.”  The screenplay is by Craig Schulz and the writing team of Bryan Schulz & Cornelius Uliano.

Pfizer launched the Centrum Nutri Coach, an easily accessible on-line tool that will allow Filipinos to keep track of the nutrients they get from what they eat on a daily basis.

The Centrum Nutri Coach is the first on-line nutrition tracker of its kind tailor-fit to the Filipino lifestyle and diet.

“Good health and nutrition is really all about eating a variety of food in the right amounts, as prescribed in the Food Pyramid. We usually count calories and fat, but we also need to consider vitamins and minerals, too,’’ said Joy Ong, Pfizer Brand Manager for Centrum.

An innovative on-line tool, the Centrum Nutri Coach allows you to input exactly what you ate from a variety of food choices that include Filipino favorites like inihaw na pork chop and halo halo into a “virtual” plate. It also takes into consideration other traditional components of health and nutrition like level of physical activity and age.  All this information will then be used to compute for your general state of nutrition and give you tips on how to improve your nutritional habits. 

The launch of the Centrum Nutri Coach comes on the heels of the research study done by the Food and Nutrition Research Instiute (FNRI) which showed that an alarming 70% of Filipino households don’t get the prescribed amount of most vitamins and minerals they need.

“What we see now is the “double burden of disease”; there is an upsurge in non-communicable disease risk factors like obesity and overweight, in addition to the existing issues of infectious diseases and undernutrition,” said Professor Liezl Atienza from the Institution of Human Nutrition and Food, College of Human Ecology at the University of the Philippines, Los Banos.

According to Atienza, the “double burden of disease” is common among many low and middle-income countries, and particularly in urban settings. Another rising form of malnutrition is “hidden hunger”, which is a deficiency or total lack of specific nutrients needed by the body.

Unhealthy eating habits such a low consumption of fruits and vegetables and high  increase in consumption of meat and meat products, coupled with a sedentary lifestyle all contribute to this.

We hope that with the launch of the Centrum Nutri Coach, we can make nutrition not just easy and accessible to everyone, but also fun. Now that we, for the first time, can actually have a hand in keeping track of our food intake, we can choose to be healthy,” said Ong.

Television’s classic comedy act “The Three Stooges” will soon be seen  on the big screen starring everybody’s beloved Glee Cheerios coach Jane Lynch. In the trio-tular character of Moe, Larry and Curly are Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso who were left on a nun’s doorstep and grew up secluded in the orphanage. Years later, the trio tries to help the orphanage when it is forced to lock doors due to financial difficulties.

Jane Lynch portrays the orphanage’s Mother Superior who sees the troika as newborn angels from heaven and later employed the three as the foster home’s maintenance men. As they try and save the day, the three engage in plenty of their trademark antics out of their comfort zone to raise funds for the orphanage.

Indeed, while the Stooges' antics are as outlandish and cartoonish as ever, the characters are, as Jane Lynch notes, "just the sweetest guys. They're buffoons and they make huge mistakes, but it always comes from the goodness of their hearts, even as they're poking each other in the eye." To Lynch's point, The Stooges are total innocents. The nuns raise them in a very sheltered manner. "So, they don't really have a concept of what's going on in the outside world," says Chris Diamantopoulos. "They are fish-out-of-water who have never seen the real world or been exposed to anything modern. The only thing they've known is the orphanage."

Apart from Lynch, the filmmakers surrounded the Stooges with an impressive ensemble, including Sofía Vergara,Jennifer Hudson, Craig Bierko – and Larry David…as a nun…named Sister Mary- Mengele.

"Sister Mary-Mengele. That name is what really attracted me to the role," offers David. "For years I said to myself, ‘if only I could play a character whose last name was Mengele. Or Goebbels.Or Goering. I’m a really authentic actor," David continues about his approach to playing outside his gender for the first time in his career. "I really researched it and I spoke with some nuns, and they told me that I couldn't really reveal what's on underneath the habit. They took me into their confidence."

The starring cast also includes Oscar®-and-Grammy® winning actress-singer Jennifer Hudson as the orphanage's resident singing nun, Sister Rosemary. "What I remember most about The Three Stooges growing up was hearing my mom speak of this classic show," Hudson says. "That was her favorite thing back in the day. She used to always tell me about it. That was one of the things that drew me to the part."

Emmy-nominated actress Sofía Vergara ("Modern Family") plays the film's femme fatale, Lydia, who tries to lure the Stooges into offing her innocent husband.Vergara, who relished playing the sultry villain, explains that the Stooges' appeal is universal, citing her own encounters with the phenomenon. "I think everybody at some point in their life watched The Three Stooges,” says Vergara.

The Three Stooges debuted on the big screen in the 1930 black-and-white feature, "Soup to Nuts," in which they appeared opposite veteran vaudevillian Ted Healy (1896-1937). It was Healy who accidentally discovered the Howard brothers (Moses and Samuel Horwitz, nicknamed, respectively, Moe and Shemp) during a 1922 stage performance in Brooklyn (the third member, Larry Fine, whose birthname was Louis Feinberg, came into the fold in 1925). Initially billed as "Ted Healy and His Stooges," the concept had the trio (Moe, Larry and Shemp) act as foils, or "stooges" to Healy's jokes. It may have been Healy telling the jokes, but The Stooges were getting all the laughs.

With the renewed popularity of the comedy trio in syndicated television in recent years, it made sense to revive the franchise in a brand new motion picture.

In “The Three Stooges” movie, the trio - Larry, Moe and Curly are introduced as three orphans dropped on the doorstep of an orphanage, ultimately raised by nuns in a very sheltered manner. The only pop culture references they have is from the very limited amount of television they’ve seen, so they don’t really have a concept of what’s going on in the outside world and they stay childlike because they are with children. They’re the ones that don’t get adopted year after year, but then they have to save the orphanage from being shut down. That’s when they’re released into the world, and of course the world colliding with these three nitwits is where the hilarity ensues.

Get to know the leader of the iconic hilarious trio in the following q&a with Chris Diamantopoulos who plays Mo in the movie.

Q: Are you able to do things with these characters that the original Stooges couldn’t?

A: What’s cool is the three guys never really got a chance to show everything that they could do. They were limited by the budgets, by the studios, even by the era, so they had to do what they had to do. There was tremendous talent within the three of them and it’s kind of great that we’re getting a chance to honor and humanize them.

Q: Mo’s pudding bowl haircut was especially iconic: it looks like they’ve done a great job in recreating his look.

A: Actually a lot of people I speak to assume that Mo’s hair was a wig, but the story behind Mo’s hair is awesome. When he was a little kid he had this really thick, luscious, curly head of hair and the kids at school made fun of him until he couldn’t take it anymore. One day he went to a friend’s house after school, pushed his hair forward and took huge shears and just cut all the way around. He was afraid to go home because he thought his mom and dad were going to punish him and ultimately his mom said to him, ‘I’m glad you did it. I didn’t have the heart to do it.’ And thus a comedy legend was born.

Q: Did you do the same kind of slapstick and did you do your own stunts?

A: Yeah - we should get those t-shirts that say, ‘I do my own stunts.’ We actually did a great deal of them. There are a lot of physical stunts in terms of hitting and slapping and poking and punching and kicking and pulling - I broke my finger poking Curly in the eye! We’ve bruised our jaws, hurt our elbows... it could have been really bad actually.

Q: How are you coping with all the slapping?

A: I finally realized how hard it hurts! Our ears were red - they were ringing. We realized early on that there was no way to keep the intensity and emotion behind the physical stuff without actually going for it.

Q: Do you see this as the beginning of a franchise?

A: That would be awesome. I started watching The Stooges religiously and obsessively when I was probably about four or five years old till around the age of 18. I loved them so very much when I was a kid, and when I heard about this film ten years ago I was dubious, as I’m sure many people still are.

Diamantopoulos was destined to play the intolerant leader of the comedy trio -- he was born four days after the death of Moe Howard (May 4, 1975). He split his childhood between Canada and Greece (Greek is his first language), began appearing in Canadian TV commercials at age nine.

Following his secondary schooling, he left home to perform in a series of U.S. national tours. He received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Che Guevara in Pittsburgh CLO's 2000 production of "Evita." A year later, he debuted on Broadway as Ethan Girard in the popular Tony-nominated musical, "The Full Monty." He has also essayed the role of Marius in the long-running musical "Les Miserables," and most recently starred opposite wife Becki Newton in Jerry Zaks' Encore!presentation of the Gershwin musical, "Girl Crazy" at New York's famed City Center Theater.

On the small screen, Diamantopoulos is well-known for several diverse character portrayals –"The Starter Wife," "The Kennedys," "24," and in "Behind The Camera: Mork & Mindy." Diamantopoulos made his film debut in the starring role of the 2000 drama, "The Adulterer," and includes among his feature credits "Drop Dead Roses," "Into The Fire," "Wedding Daze," "Three Days To Vegas," and "Under New Management."

“Taken 2” braces for a down-to-the-wire action sequence between two fathers, one exacting revenge and the other trying to keep his family alive. Liam Neeson reprises his role as Bryan Mills, a CIA operative with an unmatched set of skills who is pitted against Murad (Rade Sherbedgia) who in turn is hell-bent on taking down Mills and the rest of his family for the death of his son in Bryan’s hands.

“TAKEN 2” reunites Neeson with his co-stars Famke Janssen and Maggie Grace, who play Bryan's estranged wife and his precious daughter. “Bryan's a total superhero,” says Janssen, weighing in on what made audiences connect with the first film. “TAKEN really came at a time when people needed that in their lives, because it's about family and protecting your family. He's a very American hero.”

As heard in “Taken 2’s” trailers, Murad’s line “He slaughtered our men, our brothers, our sons. We will find him. We will have our revenge,” sets the tone for his role as the movie’s lead villain. Acclaimed character actor Rade Sherbedgia takes on the role, which director Olivier Megaton promises is “a far cry from your typical bad guy. Murad is pursuing Bryan for a big and very fair reason, which is that he wants his justice for his son, who died at Bryan’s hand.”

Unlike most movie villains, Murad desires neither power nor money, and he possesses no special training. “Murad is not a criminal by profession,” says Sherbedgia. “He is not a warrior. But he has made it his mission to extract justice from Bryan.”

Megaton looked at a number of actors for the role, and selected Sherbedgia after the actor sent some trial footage he shot himself. “While watching Rade’s footage, I was suddenly dropped into the reality of Murad’s situation,” the director enthuses. “And Rade adds so much to the movie, because he's a father, too. Liam is a father protecting his daughter and Rade is a father avenging his son.”

Bryan’s encounters with Murad are memorable, and Neeson is particularly fond of his character's final battle with the Balkan baddie. “Bryan, at this stage of his journey, is genuinely sick of killing,” says Neeson. “He has physically become a machine when he gets into the mindset of taking out these bad guys. I think his big worry is that the machine may take over from the human being. For the sake of his daughter, his ex-wife and his own soul, he wants to stop.”

Rade Sherbedgia is one of Croatia's best known and most highly praised actors, with a career on screen spanning more than four decades. HIs international breakthrough came in 1988, when he was cast by Menahem Golan to play a captain interrogating a woman who had saved thousands of children from the Holocaust in “Hanna's War.” He starred alongside Ellen Burstyn, Donald Pleasance and David Warner.

Forced to flee to Belgrade, Serbia after the dissolution of Yugoslavia, Sherbedgia performed in a number of Western European films before immigrating to the United States. Sherbedgia made an instant mark on Hollywood, starring in films such as “Mission: Impossible II,” “Eyes Wide Shut,” “Snatch,” “Shooter” and “Batman Begins.”

More recently, Sherbedgia played the role of Gregorovich, a renowned foreign wand-maker, in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.” He had a key role in Angelina Jolie's debut feature as a director, “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2011.
