In celebration of the World Hemophilia Day on April 17, the Hemophilia Association of the Philippines for Love & Service (HAPLOS) will spearhead a national gathering of different Hemophilia groups and support organizations at the Glorietta Mall in Makati City on April 11 to 12.
Dubbed “Count Me In,” the two-day activity seeks to raise awareness and understanding about hemophilia and related bleeding disorders. The event expects to gather around 300 persons with these conditions, along with their families and friends.
Hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, inherited platelet disorders, and other factor deficiencies are lifelong bleeding disorders that prevent blood from clotting properly.
People with bleeding disorders do not have enough of a particular clotting factor, a protein in blood that controls bleeding. The severity of a person’s bleeding disorder usually depends on the amount of clotting factor that is missing or not functioning. People with hemophilia can experience uncontrolled bleeding that can result from a seemingly minor injury. Bleeding into joints and muscles causes severe pain and disability while bleeding into major organs, such as the brain, can cause death.
According to the World Hemophilia Federation, about 10,000 Filipinos have hemophilia. On the other hand, there are about 1-million Filipinos possibly affeced with von Willebrand Disease and other bleeding disorders. However, only around 1,200 have been identified.
Despite being considered as a serious and lifelong condition, awareness for hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease and inherited bleeding disorders has not gained momentum in most countries including the Philippines. As a result, significant disparities in treatment still exist, with about 75 percent receiving very inadequate treatment or no treatment at all.
Through the event in Glorietta Mall, HAPLOS hopes to educate more people with the help of PWH themselves, and create a call to action in order to close the gap in care and treatment.
“Unlike other conditions, Hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease and other bleeding disorders receive little public awareness and attention. The World Hemophilia Day, celebrated by countries all over the globe, is an opportunity for the bleeding disorder community to come together, speak out, and focus on the need to improve and maintain treatment, as well as help those with the condition to live as normally as possible,” said HAPLOS President Ric Felipe.
“Count Me In” lead campaigner Andrea Echavez said the event serves as a call to action to those with hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease and other bleeding disorders to be more active and be included in the National Hemophilia Registry.
“We want to encourage people with Hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease and other bleeding disorders that even though our condition is life-long, we can be productive members of the society,” Echavez, who has von Willebrand Disease, said.
A former Inquirer reporter and now a communication consultation of an international organization, she said many patients feel overwhelmed with their condition especially when they experience bleeds.
“Our quality of life is definitely different from those without disorders. And we are not dismissing what our fellow patients feel. Many times bleeds can be overwhelming. But it should not stop us from striving to lead normal lives,” Echavez said.
Count Me In campaign also calls for volunteers from outside the Hemophilia community, public support for the Hemophilia community, and for government to look into the plight of persons with hemophilia.
The two-day event will feature psycho-social activities for children and youth by Kythe Foundation, fundraising activities such as sale of art work and products by persons with Hemophilia and their families, testimonials of persons with Hemophilia, medical lectures on hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, video loops in between programs, as well as entertainment by children and adults with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders.
There will also be a blood donation campaign with the assistance of the Philippine Red Cross.
The activity is co-organized by HAPLOS and the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC). It is supported by Glorietta Mall, BusinessMirror Group of Publications, Novo Nordisk Hemophilia Foundation, Philippine Red Cross and Kythe Foundation.
Manila, Philippines, March 26, 2014 – Robinsons Rewards Card (RRC) members will enjoy earning more points not only when they shop at their favorite Robinsons stores but also when they fuel up at Caltex. RRC members can now use their points to redeem P1 discount for every one liter fuel purchase at participating Caltex stations nationwide. Every five liter gas up earns a point which means that the more customers fuel up at Caltex and shop at Robinsons, the more points for fuel and shopping savings.
Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of Caltex fuels and lubricants, teamed up with Robinsons Retail Holdings, Inc. (RRHI), one of the largest multi-format retailers in the Philippines, to create a unique offer that allows customers to quickly and continually add value to their purchases by getting a variety of fuel and shopping rewards through their RRC.
Because of this loyalty program partnership, motorists now have more reasons to choose Caltex. Customers can save more on fuel costs when they purchase Caltex with Techron plus the five benefits of maximized power, improved fuel economy, lower emission, smoother drive and reliable performance.
In addition to fuel savings, RRC members will also enjoy big discounts in their shopping and grocery purchases as points earned at participating Caltex stations can be redeemed at any of 1,180 Robinsons stores nationwide which include Robinsons Supermarket and Department Store, Handyman, Toys R Us, True Value, A.M Builders’ Depot, and Robinsons specialty stores.
Customers can avail of this benefit by signing up for RRC membership at any Robinsons stores for P150 only.
CPI values the patronage of its customers by giving them access to top loyalty programs in the market. Last year, CPI partnered with Jollibee Food Corporation’s Happyplus program which continues to grow in memberships. Happyplus will run alongside the Robinsons Rewards Card loyalty program and customers can choose which of the rewards program they want to use.
“We like to surprise our customers in unexpected ways during their journeys. This loyalty program takes surprise to a whole new level for our loyal customers. Caltex motorists will be pleased that their Robinsons Rewards Card membership continues to reward them before or after shopping. This is possible because Robinsons Retail Holdings Inc. chose to team up with Chevron Philippines as their first external partner. We are truly proud of this long-term relationship, ” said Peter Morris, Chevron Philippines Inc., Country Chairman and General Manager for Philippine products.
Robina Gokongwei-Pe, president and COO of RRHI. said “We at Robinsons Retail are always looking for new ways to delight our customers and give them a better customer experience. That is why we are very happy to partner with Chevron Philippines Inc.’s, Caltex service stations to expand the acceptance of Robinsons Rewards beyond stores operated by Robinsons. This will be a welcome development to over 800,000 members of the Robinsons Rewards Card. With more than 700 Caltex service stations nationwide, we are very honored to have Chevron Philippines as our first external partner for Robinsons Rewards.”

Binalot (www.binalot.com) is one among many companies that practice or observe diversity from the Boardroom, to its Management and to its Franchisees. There are four women out of seven in its Board, there are women leading its operations with Irene Lucas , its COO at the helm of day-to-day activities; three women in Marketing and a woman manager in Business Development. Added to them are the many women cashiers, staff and crew in the stores. The 18-year old Pinoy fast food company credits gender diversity for its continued success.
Women in Binalot are also very much present among the franchise partners. Here we take note of some admirable examples among its business partners.
For Ami Romualdo, being a franchisee in Fisher Mall, QC takes her time. But what takes even more time is being a mother of two. So, a franchise business is actually the best deal for a busy mom like her. She can get very hectic at work but it is comforting to know that she can always turn to professionals and more experienced managers to help her run her store.
“It’s also good to have trained staff,” she continues. “At least I do not have to think of everything as all of us got trained in the same way, in the same system,” she declares.
Being women’s month, we focus on these women who balance work and family life and salute them for their ability to harmonize home and business activities.
For Jocelyn Lantaka and Marjorie Hornido, however, what they balance is holding day jobs while being franchisees at the same time. Jocelyn works for a telco while Marjorie owns and runs a construction company. These two women operate a franchise in Tagbilaran, Bohol .
They all like the idea of a franchise concept because there is a system. There is previous experience from the owners and managers who can guide provide guidance. The best opportunity for the Tagbilaran duo is the BPI Ka-Negosyo loan facility that they availed. BINALOT happens to be in the A list of BPI for Franchise Opportunity Loans.
“Take the plunge,” the two women say. “Take some risks such as getting a loan like what we did,” they say in chorus.
Another woman franchise partner is Gold Grabato who holds the distinction of running not just one, but two Binalot stores in Iloilo. She also balances her duties as a mom so she first attends to her son before going to the stores. Besides that, she also helps her husband with his construction business. She balances not only her home and family life but also take on more than the usual load of work. “I treat with a healthy dose of passion the managing of the different facets of my life as a mother, wife and businesswoman. I find it challenging and I like it that way.”
Women will always be multi-taskers and this trait is admirable as seen with these ladies who balance business and work or business and raising a family. Women are also believed to pay more attention to details and this trait helps in addressing the minute operational tasks that a restaurant business entails.
Women also know about finance because they hold the purse. They also are good borrowers as seen in many studies abroad. By getting a franchise, women have the help and expertise they need to draw experience from a proven system while being able to practice their own styles.
Being International Women’s Month, we pay tribute to these women who practice good business sense with their intuitive qualities. We hope to inspire more women like them to engage in running a business like a franchise.

Despite continuous studies for the treatment of dengue, the mosquito-borne disease remains to be incurable. Still, pharmaceutical companies and health geniuses are yet to converge their knowledge and try more possible solutions for the cure of dengue. Since the epidemic outbreak that started in the Philippines and Thailand in the 1950s, 64 years later, the best discovery to address the disease is a vaccine that prevents dengue.
However, just last year, a new type of dengue is discovered. This means that the new strain is more capable of enduring the body’s mechanism, making it stronger and harder to cure. With all these threats coming despite the progress in finally developing the treatment, still, it does not erase the people’s apprehension in having the disease.
While there is a vaccine that is formulated to prevent dengue, its efficacy is yet to be tested. We are left with no other choice but to fully protect ourselves from having this disease. After all, it’s a smart move and just like what they always say, prevention is always better than cure. One way to prevent dengue and other mosquito-related disease is through Strike Multi-Insect Killer.
Strike is a fast-acting multi-insect killer that has a water-based formula which effectively kills mosquitoes and other insects. It has lower toxicity as compared to the leading brand, thus, it is safe for people, pets and plants. It leaves to stain on the surfaces of your home and does not release disturbing odors.
Aside from the multi-insect killer spray, Strike also comes in other variants like Strike Coil Mosquito Repellent, Strike Mat, Strike Liquid Mosquito Electric Repellent and Strike Patch.
For just an affordable price, reduce the risk of having dengue and other mosquito-related diseases with the help of Strike. Strike is available at Mercury Drug and other leading drugstores nationwide.

However, many studies have proven that too much fast food plays a big part in becoming overweight and obese. Sometimes, we gain so much weight but barely even notice until one day we’re just staring at our plump selves in the mirror thinking about what went wrong. To get back on track, there’s a safe and effective pill for you.
Reducin (Anti-Obesity) is a 120 mg capsule of Orlistat, a gastric and pancreatic lipase inhibitor for obesity management. Achieving the body you always wanted is addicting. It makes you love yourself more and appreciate yourself more. It’s because looking good reciprocates a feel-good emotion that boosts our drive to maintain our figures. But like any other human being, sometimes, we fall into that one sinful act. We tend to cheat. Cheat days, or the days when you would binge on food and forget your diet plan, are allowable every once in a while, as experts would say. But when cheat days become a little too frequent, that can be the end of achieving a slim body.
What can help us maintain our bodies despite having cheat days are two effective ingredients for weight loss: L-Carnitine and Green Tea Extract. That is why ATC Healthcare International Corp. sought out the best L-Carnitine and Green Tea Extract to fit into one convenient capsule – RedoXfat. RedoXfat is a food supplement that contains 350 mg of Green Tea Extract and 150 mg of L-Carnitine.
RedoXfat’s component, L-Carnitine, is known to be effective in weight loss as it transforms the fatty acids in the body into sources of energy, thereby fueling you enough for the day. Also, having enough L-Carnitine speeds up your metabolism and improve your digestion.
Meanwhile, aside from its fat-burning capacity, Green Tea Extract is known to be an effective antioxidant as it is 200x more potent than Vitamin E in fighting free radicals in the body. Thus lessening the chance of having cancer. It may also help in improving muscle strength and in boosting the immune system. It has the ability to detoxifying the body, reducing stress and depression and improving cognitive function.
At the affordable prize of SRP P15.00 per capsule, get rid of your fats fast! Take RedoXfat every day and realize for yourself that weight loss is a life gain after all. RedoXfat is available at Mercury Drug and other leading drugstores nationwide.
According to a report by Euromonitor, Filipinos are the 3rd heaviest drinkers in the world. While many people think of this as a feat to be proud of, doctors would disagree, as excessive alcohol consumption is one of the leading causes of liver disease. Any liver disease is a serious condition, so much so that it often leads to complications that are difficult to treat. While it is difficult to avoid alcohol as it is a huge part of our culture, we can protect our livers with the right supplements.
ATC Healthcare International Corp. sought out the best ingredients out there to fit into one convenient capsule – LiverMarin. LiverMarin is a dietary supplement containing 250 mg of silymarin or milk thistle, and 100 mg of sodium ascorbate. Milk Thistle’s active ingredient “flavonoids” break down into two main components, silydianin and silychristin, which together form silymarin – a supplement found in LiverMarin that is known to have the potential to protect your liver by acting as an antioxidant, promoting the growth of new liver cells while preventing liver damage. It may also help prevent cirrhosis, or scarring of the liver, which is an irreversible damage that causes you to have a weakened immune system.
Aside from the abovementioned benefits, regular intake of LiverMarin may also help in digesting fat that aids in the treatment of fatty livers, preventing and treating hepatitis A and B, managing SGPT and SGOT levels and in managing insulin overproduction.
It is recommended to take 1 capsule 3 times a day before meals, or as prescribed by your doctor. Treat your liver right, take LiverMarin every day. At SRP P9.00 a capsule, LiverMarin is an affordable way to protect your liver. LiverMarin is available at Mercury Drug and other leading drugstores nationwide.

DepEd, Embassy of Spain, and Fundacion Mapfre Initiates Turnover of Road Safety Teaching Aids for Public Elementary Schools in PH
Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines, H.E. Luis Antonio Calvo, with DepEd Undersecretary of Programs and Projects Dina Ocampo, and Mapfre Insular president and CEO, Javier Warleta, initiated the turnover of Road Safety Teaching Aids for public elementary schools in the country, between Fundacion Mapfre and the Department of Education (DepEd).
The materials were given to improve the teaching-learning process in schools so that students may be aware of how to safely navigate Philippine roads, particularly the busy streets of the metro.
Soft copies of the program’s materials will be stored in the DepEd Portal to provide easier access for the teachers.
Ultimately, the goal is to reach out to 47,000 schools nationwide—both in the elementary and secondary levels. On top of raising awareness among the youth, DepEd, Mapfre, and the Spanish Embassy would like to extend road safety consciousness to adults as well, since they are the members of society who use the roads more often. DepEd recognizes that changes will come faster if adults lead by example. As a start, teachers must be able to learn from the program and share it with their students and families.
The Spanish Ministry of Education and Embassy have worked closely with DepEd on special programs, and are thus very supportive of the project. The collaborators would like to emphasize safety as a way of life. They believe that values and health education are as important as traffic and car safety principles.
Fundacion Mapfre, the corporate social responsibility arm of MAPFRE S.A., a leading Spanish insurance multinational company, operating in the Philippines through Mapfre Insular, has been working with the Department of Education since 2011, developing modules in two learning areas: Araling Panlipunan and Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao. Since then, road safety has been taught in at least two thousand schools nationwide. Beginning this March 2015, teaching aids will be distributed and used in schools.
MAPFRE Insular is a non-life insurance company offering general insurance for optimum financial protection and risk management. It provides insurance services on fire and allied lines, motor vehicle, personal accident, casualty, liability, engineering, marine cargo, surety, and micro insurance. Founded in 1934, MAPFRE Insular today ranks among the top five in the non-life insurance industry in terms of earned premiums, investment income, and net income. MAPFRE Insular is a part of the MAPFRE Sociedad Anonima, the largest insurance conglomerate in Spain. It is also the leading non-life insurance company in Latin America and the 6th largest non-life insurer in Europe. MAPFRE S.A. operates mainly in Spain and in over 47 countries worldwide. It has more than 23 million customers, insured vehicles, and millions of insured homes.

(RCCAT) continuously offers Filipinos a safe, affordable and relatively painless treatment for the removal of warts, moles, skin tags, milia, xanthelasma and other skin problems. “We’ve been treating and removing warts and moles under the RCC company for 18 years now. To date, he tells that there are about 24 clinical branches, which are mostly located in Metro Manila. However, as the company turns a year older this March 13, he anticipates further company growth and branch expansions in other key cities in the Philippines. “We see good future for our company because as long people do have skin, they will likely develop skin growths and skin problems so our products and services will continue.”

After BUM’s successful campaign on “Unleash Your RealiTee”, comes another unconventional attempt to provide an alternative inspiration for today’s youth in clothing—the Black Summer Collection. Contrary to the usual choice of hues for tropical summer setting—floral designs, neon or pastels are the most likely preference for getups. BUM takes on a different route and still aligned to its thrust of motivating the Filipino youth to be ‘stylish’, ‘adventurous’, ‘liberating’, and ‘tactful’ at the same time.
BUM known for its atypical concept in sense and style, it has successfully put together teen stars in Philippine entertainment industry; dominated by two of the largest television networks—the Kapamilya and Kapuso stations—Ella Cruz, Nash Aguas, Jane Oineza, Miguel Tanfelix and Bianca Umali were chosen to represent the brand. These five young stars best reflect how the common youth want to be identified, accepted, and respected as individuals and as groups.
Black Summer Collection offers a unique blend of designs and hues matched with its overarching black theme. It creates varied physical and psychological effects for its intended market—the Filipino youth. Black is being capitalized by BUM because it reflects and communicates—glamour, sophistication, and exclusivity altogether.
In March this year, BUM’s Black Summer Collection debunks the idea of black as conventional, conservative and serious since it is presented in a youthful manner with a refreshing twist in fashion sensibility.
Black Summer Collection is available in all of BUM’s boutiques and leading department stores nationwide. For more information about BUM’s Black Summer, visit www.bumequipment.com.ph or follow us “@officialbumph” on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook.
