The Araneta Center celebrates the 40th anniversary of the iconic Ali Mall

The first-ever fully enclosed shopping mall in the country.Named after the late legendary world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali, Ali Mall was inaugurated on June 30, 1976 with Ali himself in attendance. Ali fulfilled his promise to return to the Philippines after winning against Joe Frazier in the “Thrilla in Manila” the year before and was the guest of honor at the event attended by VIPs, government officials, Araneta Center executives, and members of the Araneta family.

Though the concept of a mall has since evolved, Ali Mall was the first to house a Cineplex and to introduce the concept of a food court, located at the top most level beside the cinemas. Ali Mall also pioneered the integration of entertainment to the shopping experience with Skatetown, the largest indoor skating rink in its time. Another unique feature was a five-level car park connected to each floor of the shopping area. With its offerings and design features, Ali Mall changed the shopping experience by putting a premium on customer comfort and convenience and in the process melding itself to the lifestyle of its patrons with its choices of shopping, services, dining, and entertainment.

Four decades later, the mall still operates with the same guiding principle – to be a part of its guest’s lifestyle. As the mall evolved, it introduced, among others, the first digital cinemas in the country. Today, aside from offering a comfortable destination of value-for-money shopping options, Ali Mall also offers a wide array of dining choices fit for families and friends. The mall also features the convenience of the Government and Banking Center, a one-stop, full service venue that holds 10 government satellite outlets – including a Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) branch that handles passport and document processing and soon, a Land Transportation Office (LTO) branch and four full-service bank branches.

To celebrate four decades of being part of the Filipino lifestyle, Ali Mall will hold a special sale and offer promos on the weekend of its anniversary, from June 30 to July 3.

The shopping concept that Ali Mall pioneered has since become a blueprint for many other malls to emulate and build upon. Like its namesake, it carries a legacy that has touched the lives of many, and will continue to do so for years to come.

As Araneta Center continues its redevelopment as a retail, office, entertainment, hospitality, and residential district, many new concepts are expected. Although Ali Mall will retain its standing as the country’s first mall, its claim will not solely be just being the first, it will continue to evolve, as it has done in the past to meet the needs of the lifestyle of its community.

International coffee expert Scott Rao conducts workshop for Henry & Sons Raises the bar for the coffee industry in PH

Did you smell the coffee? World-renowned writer, consultant, trainer and author of coffee books Scott Rao was in town recently to conduct a brewing class and workshop with Henry & Sons, a total coffee solutions company.

In late May, Rao — the author of coffee books The Professional Barista’s Handbook, Everything But Espresso, The Coffee Roaster’s Companion, and Espresso Extraction: Measurement and Mastery — trained the Henry & Sons team in the art and science of coffee. Henry & Sons is a company that offers three kinds of goods to the local coffee market: premium roasted coffee beans, top-of-the-line expresso machines and training for coffee shops and companies.

The coffee expert shared a variety of topics ranging from improving roasting skills, manual brewing, espresso extraction and the finer points of coffee science. He mentored the staff, shared coffee secrets, taught them about coffee shop planning, layout and design, and shared trends, new standards and techniques, among others.

Michael Harris Conlin, Henry & Sons president, said he invited Rao to work with his staff to raise the bar of the coffee business in the Philippines. “We pioneered coffee technology in the Philippines in the early 1990’s, and we want to continue to be the leader in this business. We brought Scott Rao here as a longtime partner of our company. He is the best person to help bring us to greater heights as he’s the best in the industry. Nobody comes close to him,” Conlin said.

Conlin described the relationship with Rao as something that will go beyond the workshops, “It is not just a short-term consultation. We will be working with him for years.”

For his part Rao said he was happy that everybody in the company was open and eager to learn more about coffee science, art and technology. “This company has been around for a long time, but the people are just so excited about the idea of learning some more. I like that about them,” Rao said.

“After all the learning and the science stuff, I think what I want people to remember is that coffee is here to be enjoyed and it makes people happy. At the end of the day, people are the most important thing,” Rao added.

Henry & Sons is the coming together of three legacy coffee brands : Boyds Coffee, Conlins Coffee and RICMAS Philippines. The Henry & Sons president said Rao’s workshop will help them develop products in the industry that have not yet been introduced to the market.

“We are going to launch new innovative products soon. It will be exciting,” Conlin said.

As a brash, hot-headed soldier in a time of political upheaval in Spain, the young Iñigo went from living a life of brutal violence and debauchery, to becoming one of the greatest saints in the history of the Church. This film chronicles Iñigo's torturous struggle to turn from darkness to light—a struggle that nearly destroyed him, but also gave him the key to a spiritual weapon that continues to save lives to this very day.

Synopsis 3:
‘IGNACIO’ is a full-length feature film about St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus.  It is an incisive and thrilling look at the life of the real man behind the legend, following his transformation from a brash, impulsive youth obsessed with women and sword-fighting; to the masterful, charismatic leader of an order that would change the face of Christendom.

In his lifelong quest to become the heroic Knight of his fantasies, Ignacio stares death in the face again and again, having his leg shattered by a cannonball in battle; driven to near suicide by his inner demons; finding himself imprisoned, accused of being an illuminati;  and finally finding his life in the hands of the Inquisition. Through it all, he would come to see the hand of God working in his life, shaping the self-obsessed sinner into the loyal and passionate soldier-saint.

The film also shows how Ignacio wove the trials, errors, and lessons of his eventful life into the fabric of his masterpiece, the Spiritual Exercises. Datu Puti Adobo Movement Vendors vie for top adobo dish honors

The mouthwatering Adobo and an appetite for friendly fun. The Datu Puti Adobo Movement is cooking up an exciting lineup of challenges and events to support its thrust to get Adobo its due accolade. Part of this gastronomic lineup of events is the Adobo Challenge, Datu Puti’s search for the best version of the Adobo among a lineup of budding food entrepreneurs.

The Datu Puti Adobo Movement was initially created to push for Adobo to be our pambansang ulam. It is a movement that celebrates the cultural heritage of the Adobo dish. According to the Datu Puti Adobo Movement, all Filipinos across the regions have their own take on the dish, inspired by how the traditional comfort food is prepared by their families based on the their flavor preferences and their access to local ingredients.

Friendly Competition The Datu Puti Adobo Challenge represents the next phase in the Datu Puti Adobo Movement. After the warm response to the advocacy in 2015, 2016’s Datu Puti Adobo Challenge is poised to drive more enthusiasm and sustain support for the cult fave dish. More specifically, the Datu Puti Adobo Challenge dares Mercato Centrale’s food vendors to stake their claim for the best Adobo dish in town.

Co-presented by:
To qualify, the vendor’s adobo dish must use any type of meat or vegetable, and marinated in or cooked with at least two of the three main Datu Puti products: vinegar, soy sauce, and patis (fish sauce). Accepted entries will be evaluated based on the various criteria, including: creativity of concept, which looks at the story behind the dish as well as originality, branding, and cooking technique; innovation, noting the use of unique special ingredients and Datu Puti products; and Philippine culinary heritage, including how it adopts and represents regional cooking styles.
Celebrating Adobo’s Best Mercato Centrale’s finest vendors will showcase their Adobo recipes at a gastronomic showdown at the Mercato Central Saturday market in Bonifacio Global City on June 11, the culmination of the Datu Puti Adobo Challenge.

Join the Movement on June 11 and enjoy the taste fest during the Datu Puti Adobo Challenge. Rate sheets will be tallied based on the sampling served to a select pool of judges. Then, at the end of the Datu Puti Adobo Challenge, three winners will be declared, taking into the account the flavor, story, and heart behind their Adobo masterpieces. In addition, a People’s Choice Award will also be given to the crowd favorite, based on the preferences of the foodies on site.

All Adobo winners will be awarded start-up funds in cash, so they can include their winning dishes in their regular Mercato menu for at least 12 nights. The People’s Choice awardee, on the other hand, will receive over P3,000 worth of Datu Puti goods.

Adobo Party Aside from the Datu Puti Adobo Challenge, the celebrations at Mercato Centrale on June 11 will also feature a celebration of homegrown talent, all in full support of the advocacy behind the Adobo Movement. The party will be hosted by familiar foodie Tonipet Gaba, and the feast will be made even more festive with musical performances by musical idols UpDharma Down and Ebe Dancel.

Drop by Mercato Centrale (along 7th
avenue and 25th street, across The Forum and in front of the “Between the Lines” art mural) in BGC Taguig on June 11, Saturday, to witness a showdown and showcase of the best of the best of our homegrown talents onstage and behind kitchen doors.

Marriott Manila Joins Brigada Eskwela: A Weeklong Cleanup and Beautification Project for The School for the Deaf in Pasay

Marriott Hotel Manila visits the Philippine School for the Deaf, an educational institution for the hearing impaired in Pasay City, Philippines, with a mission to serve and give back to the community. Carrying paint buckets and brushes in their hands as tools and holding the Spirit-to-Serve value in their hearts as their drive, Marriott Manila’s associate offered to join the school cleanup project. The activity, also called “Brigada Eskwela”, aims to gather volunteers from different organizations to clean up and beautify the school before its door open for students this coming academic year. The hotel, having a strong background in charitable efforts and demonstrating their core value of giving back, is the first to do the cleanup among hundreds of volunteers.

Headed by General Manager, Bruce Winton, there were 50 brilliant hosts from Marriott Hotel Manila who signed up to participate and represent the whole hotel for the project. Aside from the community service, the hotel shouldered the materials needed for the cleanup, such as buckets of paint, thinner, brushes and rollers which will help in adding more life to the school visually to inspire the kids. Restoring the beauty of the building will push students with hearing impairments to be motivated in their studies with their beautiful environment. Volunteers were divided into 3 groups, the first group is in charge for painting the pavement gutters, another group for fences and the last group paints the classrooms and corridors.
