World Glaucoma Week (Philippine Glaucouma Society)

Glaucoma: A Growing Concern

Glaucoma is a complicated disease in which damage to the optic nerve leads to progressive, irreversible vision loss.

Most interesting, around 70 million people worldwide already have this condition due in part to the rapidly aging population, according to a data provided by the Glaucoma Research Foundation of the United States.

Glaucoma is a condition that affects the eye’s optic nerve, a bundle of tissue that carries information about what one sees from the eyes to your brain. This damage is usually—but not always—caused by the build-up of naturally produced fluid within the eye. When fluid cannot escape, the resulting pressure build-up causes the optic nerve to deteriorate, resulting in vision loss and irreversible blindness.

In fact, by the year 2020, it is estimated that 11.2 million individuals will be blind in both eyes from this condition, according to professor Harry Quigley and Aimee Broman of the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute in Baltimore, Maryland.

In the Philippines, glaucoma has been ranked as the leading cause of blindness in both eyes. There are currently no reliable estimates as to how many Filipinos have the disease.

in most cases, glaucoma develops gradually and painlessly, and without symptoms—only half of those who are actually diagnosed with glaucoma have any symptoms at all. Symptoms related to loss of vision or reduced vision in a person with glaucoma already indicates advanced disease.

There are several types of glaucoma presenting with a variety of symptoms. The most common types of glaucoma called primary open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma may have completely different symptoms.

Primary open-angle glaucoma is generally quiet in terms of symptoms. There is a gradual loss of peripheral vision, usually in both eyes. Noticeable tunnel vision only occurs in the advanced stages.

That no Filipino shall ever go blind from glaucoma

For acute angle-closure glaucoma, one should watch out for the occurrence of severe eye pain; nausea and vomiting (accompanying the severe eye pain); sudden onset of blurred vision; halos around lights; as well as reddening of the eye.

In fact, majority of the patients who are elderly individuals often attribute their loss of vision to just growing old, which is not always the case.

But while vision loss from glaucoma is silent, slow, progressive, and irreversible, one should realize that it is treatable and that glaucoma blindness may be prevented. Glaucoma can be controlled, especially when detected early.

Everyone is at risk for glaucoma from babies to senior citizens although the disease is far more common in the elderly. It is therefore important to have regular eye examinations by a medical professional, especially if one is over the age of 40.

The risk of developing glaucoma increases if one is found to have high eye pressure (as measured in a routine eye examination), a family history of glaucoma, age over 45, have previous eye injury, chronic steroid use, diabetes mellitus and Asian descent.

During a glaucoma screening exam, the eye doctor will look inside the eye for signs of damage to the optic nerve. In addition, the doctor will gauge the fluid pressure inside the eyes with an instrument called a tonometer, which either rests against your eye’s (numbed) surface or sends a puff of air onto the cornea. The adequacy of the eye’s fluid drainage channels is also assessed (gonioscopy). Other tests that may be included are those that measure one’s peripheral vision (perimetry) and visual acuity.

To tackle this growing problem, the Philippine Glaucoma Society, an internationally recognized leader in providing quality glaucoma care in the Philippines through education, exchange of ideas, research and publication, partnered with multi-specialty health care company, Allergan, will lead glaucoma awareness activities during the celebration of World Glaucoma Week on March 12 to 16, 2012. Numerous glaucoma forums for lay people as well as glaucoma screening activities will be held in selected hospitals and eye centers countrywide

That no Filipino shall ever go blind from glaucoma

In partnership with the medical community, Allergan brings scientific excellence and rigor to deliver leading products that addresses glaucoma. Allergan goes above and beyond this to provide education and information with the highest level of integrity. This helps patients to fully understand the choices available to them and make well-informed treatment decisions with their doctors.

Despite the increasing worldwide prevalence of glaucoma, both the Philippine Glaucoma Society and Allergan believe that increasing glaucoma awareness will lead to early diagnosis and treatment and eventually a better chance of preventing blindness from the disease. All these to achieve the Philippine Glaucoma Society’s vision --- That no Filipino shall ever go blind from glaucoma.

Jamba Juice

Why Settle for a Half blend fruit which has more artificial sweeteners when you can have a whole fruit blend which has more vitamin and immune boosters that you can benefit from and is really a Healthy options . This comes with many variants to choose from.

From California to Manila:

The Journey of the Thriving Lifestyle Smoothie

It all started in 1990 with a blender and a zest for healthy living in the small California beach town of San Luis Obispo. Kirk Perron, an avid cyclist and dynamic entrepreneur, created delicious beverages by blending healthful ingredients together that he drank to replenish his body after the long rides. Perron became enamored to the idea of sharing his “smoothies” with everyone and poured that passion into the development of the first Jamba Juice store.

Today, Jamba Juice is already known as a full-fledged lifestyle brand, highly popular with fans committed to active, healthy living.  Now lead by one of the industry power players James D. White, President and CEO of Jamba Juice, the brand is famous for serving its delectable menu that delivers products, as well as a one-of-a-kind store experience that is better-for-everyone.

Fruitful beginnings

Will you set your heart on a 16 oz. cup of banana-berry or do you want some steal cut oatmeal? What about a hot breakfast wrap or a slice of California Flatbread™?

Questions like these didn’t come to mind when one visited a Jamba Juice store four years ago. However, in 2008, Jamba Juice began expanding the menu to include healthy and great tasting delicacies that complement the brand’s famed smoothies.

Nonetheless, adding meal options is just a part of Jamba Juice’s strategy, which the company calls the BLEND plan. “The most effective plans are those that are well-thought out and meticulously executed without hesitation,” explains White. ”You build a brand by sticking unwaveringly to your plan and driving it consistently over time.”

Endeavors for Jamba Juice bore fruit as the brand grew to more than 750 restaurant locations of which more than half are franchised. Furthermore, the Company established partnerships with various schools and national organizations to further its vision of inspiring people and simplifying healthy living.

Brought in by one of the largest food chains in the Philippines, the Max’s Group of Companies, Jamba Juice made the country its first site in Southeast Asia and targeted the niche it successfully captured in California—the active living market.

“Having a food and beverage business portfolio has provided us a perspective in the eating habits of the Filipinos,” shares Sharon Fuentebella, Managing Director of Jamba Juice Philippines. “We’ve seen how people are becoming more inclined towards dynamic and active endeavors, and this shift has prompted them to seek products that would complement that lifestyle.”

Jamba Juice launched its pioneering flagship store in Bonifacio High Street Central last November. Situated in a tropical country with a growing, dynamic population, Jamba Juice Philippines posted an excellent performance that made Manila its biggest market in Asia. “We will do our best to keep it that way,” Fuentebella adds.

Hence, the journey goes on for the team. In line with the Max’s Group of Companies’ commitment of introducing more stores to make Jamba products more accessible, they are opening the first store in the south of the metro. The Alabang Town Center Branch, which is now recognized as the second store in South East Asia, will shortly be followed by a third store, which will be located in SM Mall of Asia.

“Alabang is a great model for a district that exudes a dynamic lifestyle. In fact, it is also known for being the hometown of cyclists—an example of the active lifestyle market that Jamba Juice has successfully served in California for many years,” says Mark Gamboa, Marketing Director of Jamba Juice Philippines.

With all the effort that White, Fuentebella, Gamboa, and the rest of the Jamba Juice team worldwide are putting in, Jamba Juice will undoubtedly continue to grow across the globe. Succeeding in putting its ideals on view through a name that banners heritage, experience, and a healthy lifestyle that is better-for-everyone; the team that worked hard to make the brand what it is now can see that the 'journey' Jamba Juice had been on so far is truly worth it.

With all the effort that the Jamba Juice teams on both sides of the ocean have invested, the brand will undoubtedly continue to expand its vision of inspiring and simplifying healthy living not only the Philippines, but in various countries across the globe.

Jamba Juice is California’s iconic lifestyle brand, known for all-natural smoothies and juices. Sourcing only the highest quality of fruits from around the globe, Jamba Juice has been a hit with fans who live active lifestyles since its founding in 1990. Jamba Juice Philippines is under The Max’s Group of Companies and its first flagship store is located in Bonifacio High Street South. For more information, visit

Poetry in Motion: A Walk Through Words at Makati CBD

Poetry in Motion: A Walk Through Words at Makati CBD

Philippine literature has long reflected our country and people’s history and way of life. It has been used by our local wordsmiths to paint a picture of our daily life, our political and social struggles, our passions, dreams, and aspirations, among many others. We are a country of creative and artistic individuals who possess natural gifts to harness written words to express our emotions, sentiments, and opinions. Historical accounts have proven, time and again, the rich legacy of Philippine literature, with the likes of the duplo, bugtungan, uyayi, tagulaylay, kasabihan, and balagtasan earning their distinct places in modern-day life.

“Appreciation of poetry is universal. It begins almost when we are toddlers.,” says Filipinas Heritage Library (FHL) director Maritoni Ortigas. “Today, we are celebrating the World Poetry Day in recognition of poetry’s distinct influence to expand people’s views, understanding, and appreciation of humanity and its experience. Everything in life—what is seen, felt, and imagined—belong to poetry. Our imaginations are stirred and our minds are enriched by the magic of words, captured thought, image or metaphor. We hope this celebration manifests this.”

The same thing applies to how art and culture have shaped the lifestyle of modern Filipinos. Makati, for example, has emerged from simply being known as the original location of the country’s first-ever airport to what has become the home of the Philippines’ most recognized dynamic urban district.

Makati City’s meteoric rise as the country’s center for business, culture, lifestyle, and entertainment can be described as poetry in motion. “The development of the city did not happen overnight,” notes Mel Ignacio, Assistant Vice President of Ayala Land. “What played a key role in this regard was the seamless integration of ideas and strategic partnership among the primary stakeholders of the city—the local government unit,, the Makati Commercial Estate Association, Inc. (MACEA) and Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI).” This is the reason why Makati City continues to grow and become relevant in the modern sphere of things.

In continuing this culture of unity to make things happen in Makati, the recently launched campaign, “Make It Happen, Make It Makati,” will be reinforcing Makati’s position not just as the country’s preferred business and lifestyle destination but also as a home for poetic and artistic minds as it celebrates the World Poetry Day with an event entitled, “A Walk Through Words at the Gardens,” spearheaded by Ayala Foundation through the Filipinas Heritage Library and the group of writers involved in the Metro Serye literary magazine.

This unique event that will showcase contemporary Filipino poetry punctuated by musical landscape in an informal urban setting, takes place at the heart of the Makati Central Business District—the Ayala Triangle Gardens. “The event aims to encourage Makati denizens and Filipinos in general to continue their passion for poetic excellence while also preserving and enriching our heritage,” shares Mel Ignacio. “This will be conducted to honor the mystical beauty of Philippine poetry by bringing together some of the country’s leading writers and literary personalities who are firm believers on the power of words,” shares Mel Ignacio.

Expected to grace the event are magazine editor and the 30th National Book Awards Leisure Category finalist RJ Ledesma, and Palanca awardees Ricci Guevarra and Vim Nadera. Also included are top-caliber literature personalities- essayist, novelist, and poet Krip Yuson; poet and literary critics Jimmy Abad, Anina Abola, Eliza Victoria, and Carlomar. Music, also a form of poetry has representatives in the person of Arya Herrera and Reb Atadero from Blue Rep, and rapper Gloc9. Also performing in the said event are students from the Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University.

Poetry enthusiast Tessa Sweezy Webb first initiated the celebration of the World Poetry Day in 1936 in Ohio, U.S.A. to honor poets. In 1999, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially declared March 21 as the World Poetry Day as a tribute to poets and other literary artists in recognition of their valuable contributions to society.

Ayala Land is committed to continue working with key stakeholders, led by the local government of Makati City, to ensure the growth and development of Makati as it evolves beyond its borders into the country’s unrivaled capital for business, lifestyle, entertainment, and culture. To learn more on how we make it happen in Makati, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter at @makeitmakati.

Uratex’s Foaming Technology

By using state-of the -art equipment. Multiplex RNC Philippines of the RGC foam group, makers of the popular URATEX foam, totally revolutionized foam-making not only in the Philippines but also in South East Asia.

The Research & Development laboratory- Just like cooking a good foam starts with the perfect recipe, and in foam making, the R&D facility of the RGC foam Group, one of the country’s most advanced, is where it all starts. There, Uratex laboratory personnel develop formulations that result to certain types of foam and also conduct tests to ensure that the formulation will meet final product specifications that customers look for. Over the years, this department has developed thousands of formulations that benefited the Philippine industrial history, from the car development program in the 1970’s to the footwear, garments and electronic boom in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Photo0543     Photo0568

Foaming – Once the formulation is finalized, it is entered into the foaming machine’s computer system. There, up to 26 streams of different chemicals are dosed using computer-controlled metering pumps for precision. The liquid will turn into cream within seconds and then into solid state within 1.5 – 2 minutes, and where the solid foam block may be cut between 1 to 60 meters in length. At the Muntinlupa plant, the foam is cut in 30- meters lengths. This high tech machinery is complimented by a quality management system and ran by highly trained personnels.

Photo0548    Photo0551

Curing Area – The 30 meter long blocks are then picked up by an overhead crane and transferred to the curing area. Foam is produced via an exothermic reaction where the center may reach up to 145-165 degrees Celsius within 20-30 minutes. It will not start to cool for another 3-4 hours but will reach room temperature within 24 hours and is “cured”..

Foam block warehouse – This is the storage area for the foam blocks. From there, the plant’s production department will request for a specific type of block with different sizes as per orders coming from customers. These blocks are then moved to the production area where they will be cut according to the desired sizes

Production Area – It is from this area where the Uratex products that we all see come from. The foam blocks are cut into the requested size and then “contoured” based on the type of product to be produced, whether a pillow, a mattress, or even a car seat foam. Once cut and contoured, the product goes straight to packaging under strict quality control standards, ready for delivery to the customer.

Hence, URATEX , their technology has take them to their utmost peak of excellence having their ISO Certificates in year 2000 dominating almost all of the foaming and plastic products from monoblocks, ready wrap containers , car foaming accessories such as known brands like Mercedez Benz ,basic and fashion wear accessories such as avon and most of all   the Bedding  technologies from all foam technology  into the spring technologies standards and is competing with the most known international mattress in the World.
