“Across The Crescent Moon,” the first Filipino film in Dolby Atmos sound, gets exclusive run at Power Plant Cinema

The action drama “Across the Crescent Moon,” starring Matteo Guidicelli, is having a special exclusive run at the Rockwell Power Plant Mall Cinema from March 31 to April 4. This event is made more special because the movie is presented in Dolby Atmos sound, making “Across The Crescent Moon” the first Filipino film to be mixed in the global film audio standard.

Dolby Atmos produces breathtaking sound quality. According to, “The most immediately noticeable difference in a Dolby Atmos system is the use of overhead speakers… In a Dolby Atmos theater, every speaker—as many as 64 total—is powered independently and gets its own separate audio feed…In addition to the overhead speakers, (it) typically adds more surround speakers and screen speakers.”

Baby Nebrida, writer, producer and director of “Across The Crescent Moon” is ecstatic over this great feat. “It is a dream come true!” she declares. “Dolby Atmos transports us into the story with moving audio that flowed all around with breathtaking realism.” The veteran filmmaker described the experience as one wherein “sound moves around in a three dimensional space, so the viewer feels like he’s inside the action.”

“Across The Crescent Moon” tells the story of a Special Action Force (SAF) agent played by Matteo, who is tasked to investigate a human trafficking syndicate.  The movie had its first theatrical run last January. It is headlined by an all-star ensemble cast: Christopher de Leon, Gabby Concepcion, Dina Bonnevie, Sandy Andolong, Joem Bascon, Ivan Carapiet, and introducing Alex Godinez.

Award-winning sound engineer Mike Idioma of Wildsound is responsible for the sound design and mix. His company Wildsound launched their Dolby Atmos mixing studio two years ago. A number of Asian films have been mixed here, but Gold Barn International Corp. (producer of “Across The Crescent Moon”) is the first Filipino company to hire Wildsound’s Dolby Atmos services.

Idioma praised Gold Barn’s move, saying, “It marks a technical upliftment for Filipino cinema.” He adds that there are actually about 50 local cinemas that have Dolby Atmos but local producers have yet to maximize this technology.  “Across The Crescent Moon” now joins the ranks of international films like “La La Land,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Moana,” “Dr. Strange,” and “X-Men: Apocalypse” that are all mixed in Dolby Atmos.
Here is the full statement of director Baby Nebrida on why she pushed for this technical achievement: “When I created the story and the screenplay, I had the intention to have my film shown internationally because the subject matters about human trafficking and inter-faith relationship among Christians and Muslims have engaging universal appeal. The intended market is for international and not just local. People have commented before that Filipino films fail on technical excellence that's why it is difficult to penetrate the international theaters and satisfy its audience.

We thought of giving excellent quality photography by using the expensive Alexa XT high and Phantom quality Cameras for our film—exactly what Hollywood filmmakers use. And, then we wanted to use Dolby Atmos high quality sound, which was never used by other Filipino filmmakers in the history of Philippine cinema, to enhance the action and drama scenes with special effects so we can show to the world that Filipino sound engineers  (like our award-winning sound master Mike Idioma) have great talents and that we can access world class technical equipment in our country, too!

All these can be seen in the new version of ‘Across The Crescent Moon’ that will be shown exclusively in Rockwell Power Plant Cinemas on March 31, April 1, 2, 3, and 4!  This is a fantastic proof that the Filipinos can be world-class filmmakers!

The powerful message will be resonated to the many troubled countries that are burdened by biases and prejudices. This is a celebration, indeed, because we have many invitations to bring this film to so many countries and with the technical excellence we are proud to say that this is a Filipino made film! We showcase our country through this film and we want Filipinos overseas to be so proud of our country. We have done our best, given our all and we are so happy and so overwhelmed by the finished product! The Dolby Atmos sound is powerful, crispy and so realistic involving!

The result is sound that feels as though it's coming from the room we are sitting in. Raindrops can be heard hitting, individuals close-by, helicopters sound like they're flying right above us.
What do ‘Batman vs. Superman,’ ‘The Revenant,’ and ‘Star Wars, The Force Awakens’ have in common? They all use Dolby Atmos Sound!"

Give your eyes a break with Essilor

Give your eyes a glare-free, well-protected summer holiday with Crizal® Prevencia multi-coated lenses

Summer is best known as the season of glare-related eyestrain, when you experience stinging of the eyes because of too much concentrated sunlight. But did you also know that eyestrain can be caused by other factors? Indoors, your eyes can also suffer long-term damage after facing the TV, gadgets or computer monitors at less than a foot away.

While light is an essential part of daily life – helping you see, regulating your body clock, and even providing you with much-needed Vitamin D – too much of it can cause painful eye conditions, including eyelid twitches, eye pain and extreme sensitivity to bright light. In severe cases, overexposure can permanently damage your central vision. Harmful blue light from artificial sources such as electronic devices causes retinal cell degeneration, while ultra-violet radiation from the sun contributes to the development of cataracts.

“Everyone, no matter the age or gender, should protect their eyes daily from bad effects of excessive exposure to light,” shares Dr. Emelita Roleda, Essilor Philippines general manager. “The effects of overexposure to UV rays and harmful blue-violet light may only be visible during adulthood, when vision problems like Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) set in, so we highly advice the Filipino public to take preventive measures against them.”

Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, has come up with a solution that protects vision: Crizal® Prevencia multi-coated lenses, which selectively filters bad blue light and lets in essential good light needed for well-being.

“Essilor has undergone a rigid and thorough process in the creation of Crizal® Prevencia,” explains Dr. Roleda. “Its advanced light scan technology enables us to protect our eyes from irreversible eye conditions which threaten healthy vision.”

In addition to using Crizal® Prevencia lenses, she highly advices proper eye care. “Start by getting a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year,” she says. “Your eye doctor can determine the present condition of your eyes and help you take preventive or protective measures regarding possible vision problems.”

Another way to reduce the risk of eyestrain is taking frequent breaks from reading or monitor use, shares Dr. Roleda.

Lastly, she gives some sound sartorial advice when outdoors: “This summer, load your eyeglasses with Crizal® Prevencia lenses containing E-SPF 25. Then, pair your glasses with a nice hat or a sturdy umbrella.”

Indeed, eyesight is among the most important senses, but it receives less care than it deserves. By reducing strain, limiting exposure to harmful light, and making use of eyewear like Crizal® Prevencia lenses, you can protect your eyes all day long and ensure many more years of healthy vision.

New flavors in good quality and absolutely filling are the makings of Man Ho, the new Chinese restaurant at Marriott Hotel Manila. This new “talk of the town” Chinese fine dining dares to be the favorite spot for lunch breaks as it launches its Dim Sum Set Lunch for Php 888 only per person. A good deal with a variety of authentic dim sums from rice rolls, steamed rolls, desserts and a whole lot more.

Man Ho created an assemblage of different dim sums so you can choose options to appeal your cravings. Start off with a soothing bowl of soup, go for either Hot and Sour loaded with strips of shrimps and scallops or Braised Minced Beef Soup with tofu tidbits and cilantro – distinctly different but both are palate-cleansing for the next dishes.

Next are the popular classics, in two servings, such as Ha Kau (Hakaw) that impresses with its huge chunk of fresh shrimp; the Siao Mai (Siomai) is stuffed with quality ground pork from Hong Kong; and “Chao Zhou” Style Dumpling has that raw complementing tastes of peanut, pork and spinach. More steamed delicacies are Pork Spareribs tossed in black bean sauce making it more piquant, succulent Chicken Feet in our chef’s homemade secret marinade, and Glutinous Rice made aromatic by its lotus leaf wrapper and flavorful because of its shrimp, pork and egg yolk stuffing.

Next to love are their rice rolls that are perfectly handmade in thickness and appetizing filler options such as well-seasoned Barbecued Pork with cilantroMinced Beef with fresh enoki mushrooms, and buttery Dough Fritters.

Then, to keep you more satiated, decide whether you would go for Yang Chow Fried Rice sprinkled generously with vegetables and seafood, Fried Rice Noodles with tender beef and beans, and Braised E-fu noodles seasoned by rich meat-like black mushrooms. And of course, the desserts are off to claim its own fame. Choices are Steamed Custard Bun with oozing egg yolk inside and Baked Barbecue Pork Bun that has a textured crust and well-seasoned pork filling.

A run with nature at Filinvest City

Filinvest City in Alabang, the garden central business district of South Manila, served as the perfect venue for the recent 7-Eleven Run 2017 with the city’s greeneries as backdrop, providing over 20,000 participants ranging from fitness enthusiasts to families and friends an enjoyable race.

“We promised a bigger and more exciting run, and we are very happy that it turned out to be a success, thanks to Filinvest City and Skyway. Filinvest City provided the best venue for our runners,” said 7-Eleven general merchandise division head Jose Ang, Jr.

With a backdrop of tree-canopied roads, expansive walkways, and an innovative new “green spine,” a foliage walkway that spans across the northern and southern ends of the township, the run proved to be refreshing for the participants.

Attesting to this was Adelle Cortado from marathon group U Can Yan (UCY). “We liked the routes at Filinvest City compared to other venues because they’re more comfortable and they’re surrounded by trees that’s why you won’t get sick of the scenery,” she shared.

For couple Adrian Madrelejos and Noreen Sumile, they considered their first run together in Filinvest City as a unique way to date. “Our first marathon together was enjoyable because the weather was cool in Filinvest City, which made our run easier,” they shared.

With the success of 7-Eleven Run 2017, Filinvest Alabang, Inc. executive vice president Catherine Ilagan said, “We are thankful that 7-Eleven chose Filinvest City to be the venue of their annual run, and with the newly developed Filinvest City Event Grounds, we look forward to staging more events of this sort in the future.”

Filinvest City is a 244-hectare masterplanned property in Alabang that is home to some of the country’s premiere institutions and global companies like Filinvest’s very own Festival Mall, Crimson Hotel and Palms Country Club.

Indeed, it was the perfect day for professional runners, fitness buffs, families, and friends to take part in the biggest run of the year and experience a healthy dose of the outdoors at Filinvest City.
