Every change, every trend, every upgrade has its boon and bane. In “Channeling,” first time director Drew Thomas precursors on the imminent dangers of one’s wanton desire for fame and fortune via daily self-broadcasts.
“Channeling” revolutionizes social media with its eyecast tool – a contact camera that one can wear on their eyes where it transmits real time all the information and sent directly to one’s smartphone or tablet. The movie is a futuristic thriller on people who seek validation by broadcasting their lives to as big an audience as possible.
In the movie, a soldier returns home on bereavement leave to discover that his brother's accidental death...wasn't. With 72 hours to solve the mystery, Jonah assumes his brother's identity, and enters a world of voyeurism and exhibitionism that's as dangerous as it is addictive - a world in which people broadcast their lives in real time to as large an audience as possible. Hungry for ratings and the approval of their followers, these 'Channelers' engage in increasingly risky and self-destructive behavior.
“Channeling” will open in cinemas this July 2 from Crystalsky Multimedia.
Alpha ape Caesar has found an uneasy human ally in “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” in Malcolm, a former architect who lost his wife to the virus that wiped out most of humanity. Left on his own to raise his teenage son, Malcolm is desperate to maintain the hope and stability he and Alexander have found within a small colony of fellow survivors in San Francisco.
Malcolm is played by Jason Clarke, who rose to mainstream attention with his engaging characterization in Kathryn Bigelow’s gripping suspense drama and Oscar® nominated “Zero Dark Thirty” where he also received acclaim for his work. Clarke brings his equally gritty performance in “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” as Caesar’s principal human contact. “Malcolm is sort of a mirror to Caesar, trying to rebuild his community in the ruins of a world that is gone forever,” says director Matt Reeves. “There’s a lot of mistrust and throwing of blame on both sides,” adds Clarke. “From the point of view of the humans, there’s a lot of anger about how mankind has suffered because of the virus. The humans wrongly blame the apes for causing the virus, though humans actually created the virus in a lab a decade earlier.”
Caesar and Malcolm must make choices, compromises and decisions that not everyone respects. Both are fathers and must protect not just themselves but also their nascent societies. In this respect, the film is the story of two families – one human, one ape.
Jason Clarke talks about walking onto set in the middle of a lush rainforest in British Colombia: “It’s simply amazing – old-growth forest, 3D cameras, motion cap cameras, wires going everywhere, smoke machines, fog machines, rain and mud, a crew of hundreds and then there’s 50 actors performing as apes walking around the forest. I always prefer shooting on location rather than on a soundstage. It just brings so much in terms of realism to the project. This goes for the actors portraying the human characters and for the ‘apes actors’ as well. These guys are not just sitting in a volume. They’ve got to interact with people and the forest and the mud and everything else and the rocks and the stones and the rain.”
“My character Malcolm was a white-collar guy that’s had to toughen up, particularly to bring himself and his child through this. In the small colony where they belong, they have managed to get their act together to actually function again, and then it’s threatened. It’s a Pocahontas story as well: we come again and we’ve got to deal with people who have a right to be here and belong just as much as we do. Which is where Caesar and Malcolm find themselves, in their meeting. It’s not just like, “hey, you’re hungry, have some food.” We both know the repercussions of everything we enter into, which I think is really interesting. I’m not worming my way in there, or getting them to do what I need without a knowledge of how this has gone in the past and how it could possibly go again, once we get it together. And they know that as well. But then I think what happens with Malcolm and Caesar is something unique. Malcolm gets to have a unique experience — as you would when you see an ape talk!” Clarke finally describes of his character.
“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” opens July 9 in more than 200 screens nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Forget monopods and today’s parity gadgets because the future of live broadcast “selfies” is about to be seen in “Channeling,” a visionary movie taking today’s social media to a new level, using wearable eye-cast contact camera lenses that shows everything the human eye can feast on real time that the audience can watch on their smartphones.
Set in a future that is just about to happen, the mother of all live streams and updates unfold in “Channeling” directed by first time director/writer Drew Thomas starring Taylor Handley known for his roles in “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” and “Battle Los Angeles,” with interesting supporting cast that includes Kate French, Skyler Day, Dominic DeVore, Ryan Walker and Landon Ashworth, “Channeling” follows the lives of a young group of people broadcasting their daily lives to the most number of audience possible and competing to reach viral hits no matter what the cost.
The film starts with a car chase in which Wyatt Maddox (Taylor Handley) is driving accompanied with Tara (Kate French). We then later learn that this car chase ends fatally for Wyatt. The story then continues with Wyatt's soldier brother Jonah (Dominic Devore) returning home for the funeral. On discovering his brother's online existence under the channel name Wyld_Life, Jonah decides to pose as Wyatt and reawaken his channel in order to lure his killers.
Meanwhile, other online players and selfie broadcasters such as high school student Ashleigh Maddox (Skyler Day) the little sister of Wyatt and Jonah is at an impressionable stage where having recognition and admiration from your peers seems like the most important thing to give you a sense of belonging.
Director Thomas shares that even though his movie tackles the extreme side of social media, “I didn’t feel that that social media was to blame but that together with people it can be evil and pervasive. But then I think that's how some people view social media, I find it particularly annoying when 'friends' of mine post every minute detail of their life – I definitely don't think I'll be tuning into livecasting channels in the near future, well, not unless they are doing something exciting.”
Timely as today’s social landscape, “Channeling” had been awarded Best Feature Film (Sci_Fi) at The London International Festival of Science Fiction & Fantastic Film, Best Feature Film at the Phoenix Film Festival and is the Official Selection at the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival and Dances With Films.
“Channeling” opens very soon this July 2 from Crsytalsky Multimedia in theatres nationwide. Check out the movie’s thrilling trailer here:

Following the emotionally arresting story of “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” the latest movie “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” takes place 10 years after a viral apocalypse known as the Simian Flu hit the humans whose numbers have been severely depleted. The Apes, on the other hand, have done quite well amidst the pandemic with Caesar at their helm. Caesar, the prime intelligent ape with human-like qualities, who can strategize, organize and ultimately lead a revolution, borne and developed by genetic engineering has now led his kind to freedom and has built a new home where humans have difficulty thriving.
Dawn’s director Matt Reeves, who created a vivid and unexpected sense of realism in his 2008 thriller “Cloverfield,” says, “My hope is that audiences – even knowing about the visual effects – will say, ‘Wait a minute. There weren’t real live apes in the movie at all?’ “That to me is an exciting idea because it creates emotional reality. If you believe these apes are real and they are emoting, then your involvement just becomes deeper and deeper. I think that’s one of the miracles of what Weta has achieved.”
More than 85 percent of “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” was shot in the forests of Vancouver and outside New Orleans. Serkis calls this a “huge technical leap that enables there to be no disconnect with the other actors.” Shooting a film of this scope and scale in native 3D, coupled with the complex performance capture work amidst stunning yet challenging exterior locations was exponentially more difficult than what had been achieved on Rise of the Planet of the Apes. That latter featured mostly interior sets, but “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” depicts a community of 2,000 apes, living in wild surroundings, in humid, rainforest environments.
To capture the performances, Weta Digital had 35 people on each unit, an array of 50 or so mo-cap cameras and eight witness capture cameras that were constantly rolling on anything that involved an ape character. Joe Letteri, senior visual effects supervisor, notes that this groundbreaking technology was able to record the performance capture on location with all the other actors having a more coherent performance. He further explains that “Everyone is in the moment together. And that’s really what we were trying to do with the new technology we developed.”
Production designer Chinlund adds, “Matt, from the beginning, has been very explicit about this being more than just a post-apocalyptic world. This is a story about the birth of a civilization. I think it’s sort of a restart for the planet Earth. It was exciting to try and imagine how that would happen and also watching this new society built its world. I feel like the apes are going through the same evolutionary path that we did and running into the same pitfalls and trying to figure out how to build their new world. It was a really fun opportunity to try to think like an ape and help create that society.”
A new civilization is about to inherit the Earth when “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” comes in more than 200 screens nationwide (2D and 3D format) on July 9 from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
Serving cinemas soon, “Black Butler” is based on the Manga series known as “Kuroshitsuji" by Yana Toboso that was first published September 2006 by Monthly GFantasy. Starring Hiro Mizushima in the titular role, Black Butler Sebastian with Ayame Gouriki as Shiori along with Mizuki Yamamoto, Yuka, Yuu Shirota and Takuro Ohno, the movie is set in the year 2020, Shiori Genpo (Ayame Gouriki) runs the large corporation Funtom while Shiori is also a descendant of the prestigious noble family Phantomhive of England. As a descendant of the noble family Phantomhive, Shiori solves difficult cases which are ordered by the queen.
In order to take revenge, Shiori makes a deal with Butler Sebastian (Mizushima). Their deal involves Butler Sebastian protecting Ciel until her revenge is fulfilled and then Sebastian will consume Shiori's spirit.
“Black Butler” opens exclusively in SM Cinemas nationwide on July 23 from Axinite Digicinema. Trailer link here: chttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMPEVymqQN8

BEGIN AGAIN: KIERA KNIGHTLEY takes on ADAM LEVINE Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine may have won several Grammy Awards, sold millions of albums worldwide and judged the hit TV series The Voice, but in the movie BEGIN AGAIN, he gets upstaged as the spotlight turns to actress Kiera Knightley. “I’ve never done anything like this,” admits Knightley who is best known for her costume dramas and period films such as “Pride & Prejudice,” and “Atonement,” as well as the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. “My character has pretty much died in everything I’ve done for the last five years,” she jokes. “I decided I’d like to do something where I didn’t have to go through heavy emotional turmoil and die, if at all possible. There’s a touch of emotional turmoil in this, but in the end I found it to be incredibly hopeful.
It’s rare to find pieces of work that are so full of hope.” The latest film from writer-director John Carney (ONCE), BEGIN AGAIN tells the story of two lost souls who meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label.
But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Disgraced record-label exec, Dan Mulligan (played by Mark Ruffalo) is facing a failing marriage, a career he can’t keep up with, and a daughter he can’t connect to. But at his most desperate moment, he hears a powerful song by Gretta, an unknown musician on the brink of giving up her musical dreams after unexpected heartbreak and frustration. An unlikely pair who are brought together by equal parts inspiration and desperation, the film follows them as their musical partnership develops into a deep friendship, and their lives take unexpected turns.
Bound together by their mutual determination to bring Gretta’s music to life by recording her songs outdoors – with the sounds and rhythms of New York City as a sonic backdrop – they ultimately find themselves enmeshed in one another’s emotional lives, unsure of how the boundaries between friend, partner, and potential lover are supposed to be drawn. “It’s an odd-couple type of relationship,” observes Knightley. “These aren’t necessarily two people who would find each other, but this happens at a very strange moment in their lives, and they end up being exactly what the other needs.” “Well I know that I’m not horrendous, and I really enjoy doing it in the shower but there is singing and there’s SINGING, I suddenly found myself in the studio and thought I have no “f—ing” idea how to do this. Fortunately, my character doesn’t actually like singing in front of people.
She likes writing and performing on her own, so that was quite useful,” Knightley said in an interview with Glamour magazine. “A lot of the music wasn’t finished until I got to New York. I had been working with a vocal coach to find a sound that would work for the character, but two or three of Gretta’s songs were just handed to me on the day we recorded them, so there was been a bit of flying by the seat of our pants and hoping for the best. There’s an old stage saying: ‘It’ll be all right on the night.’ So far, it all seems to have gone all right.” Her modest impressions of her own talent were also playfully contradicted by her costar: “Keira is fantastic,” says Ruffalo. “She’s fun and game for anything and a talented singer.” Keira brought an extra dimension to the script,” says Carney. “We suddenly had an English-American relationship which added a dimension of charm, and allowed us to have a very different tone from a cast of all Americans or all New Yorkers.
In a way it reminded me of old films like CHARADE, where those two cultures meeting is part of the story’s appeal. I think as a filmmaker I need to play to the strengths of the actors, so Mark and Keira really shaped the film. As a director, I use the skills the people have, rather than what I wrote. Not to take advantage of that is a crime.” Also discovering her musical talent is Hailee Steinfeld, who earned an Oscar nomination for her scene-stealing role in the Coen Brothers’ TRUE GRIT opposite Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon.

Man’s experiments with genetic engineering in the previously (2011) released blockbuster “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” led to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. Thus, Caesar, a newly orphaned young chimp then has risen to become the supreme of all apes, with his highly-developed intelligence comes an aggressive and dangerous protective instincts typical of adult male as he matures.
Now, Caesar not just speaks, but rules a steady growing nation of genetically evolved apes in “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” where a pandemic known as the Simian Flu wiped out most of the human race and where the apes have continued to build a community in Muir Woods. Gradually the lights of civilization began to dim and become non-existent. For all intents and purposes, humanity has perished. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.
Producer Dylan Clark notes, “A viral apocalypse hit the humans and 10 years later, their numbers are severely depleted. Apes, on the other hand, have done quite well. Caesar has led them to freedom and he’s built a new home. The apes have risen, and the humans have declined. And now they’re about to collide.”
Still, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES is about survival and not an apocalypse. “There is a sense in the beginning of the story that apes have inherited the Earth,” says Reeves. “A small group of humans is struggling to come back from devastation, and the apes are fighting for survival. It’s an ape world, and we explore whether apes and humans can figure out a way to live together without violence.”
“Caesar is the alpha-ape,” Serkis continues. “He’s a natural leader. The other apes respect him because he has an innate sense of fairness, he values their opinions, and he includes them in the decision-making. He’s definitive in his decisions but also relies heavily on the advice of his inner circle, his council.”
At the same time, Caesar is conflicted about humanity because of the way he came into the world and was raised among humans. He was an outsider, even though he learned human belief systems and thought of Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ character Will as his father. He’s a creature who is going through the very human experiences of being rejected and finding his people.
Caesar as a leader, parent and mate provides abundant ground for Serkis to explore as an actor. “Caesar is a father now: he’s got a mate, a son and a baby,” the actor notes. “He is responsible for the survival of a community. On the other hand, he has empathy for humans, and still, deep down, he feels a need to be able to communicate with them.”
DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES also explores how the apes evolved from the mostly mute but intelligent animals of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, into articulate, civilized beings that emerge as Earth’s dominant species within the canon of the Planet of the Apes franchise.
Reeves explains: “In Rise of the Planet of the Apes the apes said only a few words. With this film we show the apes at the dawn of their society, and learning to truly speak. Inevitably, the younger generation will be better with language than their parents, which leads to a very complicated portrait of the apes’ cultural order. This is the ape society that eventually evolves into what we see in the 1968 Planet of the Apes with an organized government, military and science.”
DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES co-screenwriter Mark Bomback says one of the script’s biggest challenges was to depict how the apes communicate with each other and how much the apes articulate verbally. “At the end of Rise of the Planet of the Apes it’s shocking when Caesar speaks an entire sentence. In this film, we explore how much further the apes have advanced in their language skills. We struggled a lot with this because there’s a temptation to just give the apes pages and pages of dialogue. But there was a huge plausibility issue that we were contending with, which is it’s only been ten years since the events of the previous film, and if Caesar is only able to say one sentence in that film, then how much speech would he really be capable of in this one?
The same experiments that drove Caesar and his community to escape are continuing to make them more intelligent, which leads to new forms of verbal expression. “This time there is an evolution in linguistic terms,” Serkis explains. “We worked in great detail in terms of creating that level of sophistication versus ‘finding’ language. Caesar communicates through the sign language he was taught, which has become a unifying way of speaking with the other apes. At the same time, he’s verbalizing more.”
Hear more of Caesar when “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” opens July 9 in cinemas nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
Academy Award Winner director Paul Haggis (“Crash) once again explores complex characters in the intriguing interconnected stories in “Third Person” starring Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Maria Bello, James Franco, Mila Kunis, Adrien Brody, Loan Chabanol and Moran Atias.
At the core of the story is Liam Neeson, who plays Michael, a Pulitzer Prize winning author who has holed himself up in a hotel suite in Paris to finish his latest book. He recently left his wife, Elaine (Kim Basinger), and is having a tempestuous affair with an ambitious young writer, Anna (Olivia Wilde) who has her own agenda.
At the same time, Scott (Adrien Brody), a shady American businessman, is in Italy to steal designs from fashion houses. Hating everything Italian, Scott is in search of something decent to eat when he meets Monika (Moran Atias), a breathtakingly beautiful gypsy, who is about to be reunited with her young daughter. When the money she has saved to pay her daughter’s smuggler is stolen, Scott feels compelled to help. They take off together for a dangerous town in Southern Italy, where Scott starts to suspect that he is the patsy in an elaborate con game.
Julia (Mila Kunis), an ex-soap opera actress, is caught in a custody battle for her 6 year-old son with her ex-husband Rick (James Franco), a famous New York artist. With her support cut off and her legal costs ruinous, Julia is reduced to working as a maid in the same upscale boutique hotel where she was once a frequent guest. Julia’s lawyer Theresa (Maria Bello) has secured Julia one final chance to change the court’s mind and be reunited with the child she loves.
“Third Person” tells three stories of love, passion, trust and betrayal, the tales play out in New York, Paris and Rome - three couples who appear to have nothing in common and only tangential connections. But there is always a third person in any relationship -- perhaps not romantically, perhaps you aren't even aware of their existence, but they are there. At its heart, Third Person is much more than a collection of love stories -- it is a mystery; a puzzle in which truth is revealed in glimpses, and clues are caught by the corner of your eye -- and nothing is truly what it seems.
Renowned actress and activist, Bello shares, “Like most of the characters in this film you don’t really understand who this character is until it unfolds towards the end. Paul is such a beautiful writer that the character keeps getting more and more complex, so in the beginning you think Theresa’s this straight arrow lawyer who’s representing Mila Kunis’ character Julia in her custody case, but then you find out towards the end that she has her own complication and pain going on”.
“Paul Haggis has been a dear friend for ten years, but we’ve never worked together, and I’ve always loved his writing, so, when I first read this, like, every other script he’s ever written, I fell in love with it and really, really wanted to do it and I’m so pleased to be here. It’s fun working with him but of course there’s this fine line between ‘friend’ who I’ve known forever, and ‘director’… and he walks that edge so beautifully. He’s incredibly supportive and has very strong vision about what he wants so, as an actor you feel very safe in that, and yet very free to express yourself,” Bello says further.
Find out who ends up with the “Third Person” when it opens June 18 in theatres from Axinite Digicinema.

Award-winning director Paul Haggis’ latest romantic thriller “Third Person” follows the journeys of three sets of couple at three different stages of a relationship set at the backdrop of Paris, Rome and New York. The movie’s main character Michael, played by Liam Neeson, a novelist who’d been famous for his previous work has holed himself up in a hotel suite in Paris finishing his latest book. Within the hotel works a maid named Julia, Mila Kunis’ character – an ex-soap opera actress who was once a frequent guest at the hotel.
Julia is caught in a custody battle for her 6-year old son with her ex-husband Rick played by James Franco, who is a famous New York artist. With her support cut off and her legal costs ruinous, Julia’s lawyer Theresa (Maria Bello) has secured Julia one final chance to change the court’s mind and be reunited with the child she loves. Julia’s sole motivation in life is to gain joint custody of her son but her fragile psychological state and the circumstances of her marriage break-up make that a big challenge.
A fan of the director’s works, Kunis had no qualms joining the cast, “I’ve been a fan of Paul’s work and he has a very specific way of writing so I didn’t necessarily know what to expect but I knew it was going to be intertwining storylines. I can honestly say that there are those movies that come along that they make you realize why you love doing what you do and working with Paul Haggis made me fall in love with my job again. I love it, I love every aspect of how he works, how he interacts, how, confident he is and how confident he makes you feel. I think we just kind of get each other’s work ethic and work rhythm. He trusts me and I trust him that’s just so incredibly important”.
“Given the complexity of the film, Julia is a hard character to explain,” says Kunis of her character. “She’s slightly misunderstood but she means well. Technically speaking, she’s in a custody battle with her ex-husband Rick for their child Jesse. At heart, Julia’s a sweet person but she’s always late and if a person has to make a right or a left turn, she always makes the wrong choice, but it’s not on purpose so you can’t blame her for it. Maybe she just has the world’s worst luck, or maybe not. She seems to be constantly put in situations where she’s just being attacked or accused of not being good enough.”
Kunis’ onscreen ex-hubby in the film, James Franco, Rick, pulls their son away from her mother. “Rick is one of a number of characters who come in and out of the film and he’s an artist, a painter in New York and has a child with Mila Kunis’ character Julia. He and Julia have had a very rocky past and she seems to be emotionally unstable and irresponsible and maybe even dangerous towards Jesse, our child. So, I gain custody of Jesse and I prevent her from seeing him because I think she might hurt him. Paul writes very intricate characters. I remember years ago he once told me that he likes to make himself the villain. He likes to put himself into his characters,” Franco enthuses.
“Mila Kunis and I have done something like seven projects together, after working together so many times, there’s certainly a shorthand with Mila Kunis and I. We just get along very well. We’ve kind of done everything together - fantasy, comedy, drama, a weird vampire thing, an experimental movie, so I guess the only thing we haven’t done is maybe action, so we’re looking for a, an action script next!” concludes Franco.
“Third Person” opens June 18 in theatres nationwide from Axinite Digicinema.
