“What is Love” lyric video performed by Janelle Monáe from Blue Sky Studios’ “Rio 2” family movie is now up on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gcrn3JXdhjs&list=PLcZs6n5iZPx9ABSMcYgUN4YhRQm---1b8 .
In April 2011, Twentieth Century Fox released Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studio’s CG animated feature “Rio.” The film was born from the imagination of Carlos Saldanha, who co-directed or directed the global blockbusters “Ice Age,” “Ice Age: The Meltdown” and “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.”
To fully realize the scope and breadth of this magical world and its vivid characters, Saldanha brought together an all-star voice cast, led by Oscar® nominees Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, Oscar and Grammy®-winner Jamie Foxx, acclaimed musical artist will.i.am, actor-musician Jemaine Clement, comedic actress Leslie Mann, actor Rodrigo Santoro (a Brazilian native), actor-comedian George Lopez, and funnyman Tracy Morgan.
The filmmakers enveloped the action – and audiences – with a combination of Brazilian sounds and contemporary pop music. The soundtrack featured a stellar musical cast performing under the guidance of composer John Powell and Brazilian music legend and “Rio’s” executive music producer, Sergio Mendes. “Rio” became a worldwide smash with a global box office tally of $486 million. It also was a huge hit on DVD and Blu-ray disc.
Now, Saldanha returns to Brazil and reunites his beloved characters in RIO 2. In the new film, it’s a jungle out there for Blu, Jewel and their three kids, after they’re hurtled from Rio to the wilds of the Amazon. As Blu tries to fit in, he goes beak-to-beak with the vengeful and villainous Nigel, and meets the most fearsome adversary of all…his father-in-law.
Our favorite “Rio” characters are joined by Oscar nominee Andy Garcia, Grammy winner Bruno Mars, Tony® winner Kristin Chenoweth and Oscar/Emmy®/Tony winner Rita Moreno. RIO 2 also features new Brazilian artists and original music by Janelle Monáe and Wondaland.
In RIO 2 we find Blu, Jewel and their family living the perfect domesticated life in the city. The offspring are: Bia(voiced by “The Hunger Games’” Amandla Stenberg), who lives with her beak in a book and likes spouting facts and figures, just like her dad; Tiago (Pierce Gagnon, “Looper”) the youngest, who is always up for adventure, especially if it involves destroying something; and Carla (singer/actress/comedian Rachel Crow), the eldest, a spunky teen who longs to get a little space from her protective family so she can express her musical side.
So, in RIO 2, it’s on…in the Amazon, not only visually, but musically. “We wanted to look at different musical ‘flavors,’ sounds and exciting new beats that make the soundtrack for RIO 2 even bigger than the first film’s,” says the director.
After Saldanha wrote the story, screenwriter Don Rhymer, who had worked on “Rio,” began fleshing out Saldanha’s ideas. It was a fruitful collaboration, which sadly ended when Rhymer passed away in late 2012. “Don was our guy,” says Saldanha. “He embraced the vision of the first film and had really exciting ideas for RIO 2. His death left a big gap for us. We were lucky to have the amazing writers Carlos Kotkin, Jenny Bicks and Yoni Brenner help finish the screenplay, but Don was a very special person who played a big role in the project’s development.”
“Rio 2” in 2D and 3D opens April 9 in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

It’s a dream team pairing in the upcoming romantic caper, “The Love Punch,” starring ever-sassy Emma Thompson and always-charming Pierce Brosnan as ex-couple who reunite to steal back the money stolen from their retirement fund.
“The Love Punch” sees middle aged and divorced, company owner Richard Jones (Brosnan) looking forward to a worry-free existence as he arrives at his office on his last day of work. Much to his dismay, he discovers that the management buyout of his company was fraudulent. The company is now bankrupt and the employee pension fund - including his own - has been embezzled. Enlisting the help of his ex-wife Kate (Thompson), Richard sets out to track down the shady business man behind this, Vincent Kruger. Before they know it, Richard and Kate are caught up in a cat and mouse caper across Europe in a whirlwind of intrigue, mad chases and jewelry theft during which they rekindle their romance.
Five years after “LAST Chance Harvey’s” international success, screenwriter and director Joel Hopkins wished again to team up with Emma Thompson. Straight away, the actress was excited about the story of a couple, divorced for eight years, who embark on a roller-coaster journey. And just as she came up with the name of Dustin Hoffman for “Last Chance Harvey,” it was she who thought of Pierce Brosnan for this new project.
"I got excited by the idea of this ‘classic’ movie couple," Hopkins explains. "The starting point is to find a pairing that really excites me even before writing the script and then build a story around them. I really like to cast the movie in my head while I'm writing.” Nicola Usborne, Hopkins's wife and producing partner, agrees: "We've worked together for fifteen years and Joel always begins with characters or preferably with actors and then builds an arc around them".
Pierce Brosnan is enthusiastic about the filmmaker: "Joel as a director has a very good ear for the rhythm of comedy and for the articulation of speech and pacing of dialogue", he says.
Emma Thompson compares the way Hopkins directs actors to the careful making of a dessert: "It's very delicate and it's all about finding the right balance of ingredients", she comments. "It's really like a soufflé doing this kind of work - you have to get the air into the mix just to make something that really rises. That's what you want in a director – someone who absolutely collaborates and lets you try things but who also tells you 'I want it like this and not like that'.”
The director will look back fondly on the production of the film: "I've always had a relationship with France", he admits. "I found the crew very invested in the project as a whole, not just in their departments, but interested in the whole project, helping the whole film come together. Perhaps in England, people are a little more inside their departments and less interested in the process as a whole".
Emma Thompson agrees: " In France, I noticed that the camaraderie existed between all the partners. You'll be at lunch, which is like a family thing, and everybody sits down to eat and talk with each other, and even have a glass of wine. Not me, though. I live like a nun when I’m shooting".
Pierce Brosnan is just as excited about France as the director: "I've come here over the years with James Bond, but this has been the most in-depth experience with a 100% French shoot", he contends. "You're surrounded by this sense of cinematic history, and it permeates your being.”
Producer Clément Miserez concludes: "I dream of doing “Love Punch 2” and “Love Punch 3” any time, and of working again with Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson, because they're both nice and humble, and the whole crew would tell you just the same!"
“The Love Punch” will open at a cinema near you on April 19 (Saturday) from Axinite Digicinema.

Yesterday, March 26, 2014 was the special screening of Captain America and Life Oil Malunggay was one of the company that endorses the movie together with PROEARTH run who both advocates wellness of the body and the mother earth as well. This time Captain America in return gives back the option of endorsing the products and run event at the same time here at SM Mega Mall Ortigas , Pasig Manila.
Moringa oleifera (malunggay) has been around forever, used by our great grandparents to cure a myriad of illnesses. Considered a miracle plant, malunggay is also the most inexpensive medicine of all time, helping cure at least 300 diseases.
According to The Tree of Life by Dr. Monica Marcu, malunggay is the richest and most complete source of essential nutrients among other plants. It contains natural vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids, phytonutrients and chlorophyll.Hundreds of published scientific studies all over the world have proven the numerous health benefits of malunggay (www.TFLJournal.org <http://www.tfljournal.org/>).
Though popular as an ingredient in cooking, heat in fact significantly reduces the nutrients in malunggay. And even with the commercialization of malunggay capsules, tea, powder, and others in the market, malunggay’s natural components are actually reduced through processing. The best way to get the nutrients from malunggay is to eat it fresh.
However, humans have limitations on the consumption of leaves because of fiber overload. Many people also cannot tolerate the taste and texture of fresh malunggay leaves.
Manila Nature’s Link Corporation, a unique alliance of key resources including a biotechnology company that utilizes on traditional and indigenous medical systems, plant-pharmaceutical labs and oil extraction facilities, has developed the Life Oil capsule, a pure moringa oleifera extract that is 100% natural, safe and potent.
One Life Oil capsule is equivalent to 5 cups of fresh malunggay leaves, without the fiber. Life Oil is far more complete and potent than powdered malunggay leaves in a small hard capsule. Crushed or pulverized malunggay leaves, if harvested randomly, may contain sulfur from acid rain and carcinogens due to heavy metals like lead, chromium, and mercury.
Manila Nature’s Link engaged in an in-depth research and development and applied the strictest manufacturing standards in making Life Oil.A special cleaning process is used to ensure purity and safety because malunggay leaves have small pores that repel regular water. For consistent potency, the company identified and propagated a specific variety of malunggay and the extraction of oil is done immediately after harvestto keep its natural nutrient potency and freshness.
LifeOil does not contain moringa bark which has anti-nutritional content, and moringa flower, roots, and gum which can cause abortion. It is made of pure malunggay leaves and seeds extract that contains anti-oxidants, carotenoids, high energy, goiteren, iron, omega 3, protein, vitamins, minerals, and chlorophyll.
Life Oil contains potent chlorophyll, the green substance in plants that cleanses organs, delivers oxygen to all tissues and encourages the growth of good aerobic intestinal bacteria. Chlorophyll is the first to die when malunggay is heated or dried.
There are a variety of malunggay products in the market but the Philippine-manufactured Life Oil is the world’s first and only product developed from pure moringa oliefera seeds and leaves. Each soft gel capsule contains 500mg of combined oil extract, which is equivalent to 1,000 grams of malunggay leaves and seeds.Life Oil soft gel capsules capture the benefits of malunggayto increase energy, strengthen the immune system, manage sugar levels, lower cholesterol levels, control blood pressure, and fight cancer.
Malungai LifeOil, available in leading drugstores nationwide in 5ml soft gel capsules, is the best food supplement to make people cope and rise above with the demands of the fast-paced and stressful lifestyle of today.
Get the best of malunggay in LifeOil. #
Malunggay Deserves More
Filipinos often take malunggay for granted, being a backyard vegetable that is so easy to grow and harvest. Malunggay leaves are added ingredients for soups and many Filipino dishes, and is famous to produce more milk in lactating mothers. Old Filipino households never bought malunggay leaves, as trees were abundant and neighbors were allowed to just get their leaves and stems any time.
Scientists all over the world have proven that malunggay is rich in Vitamins C and A, iron and high-density lipoprotein of good cholesterol, making it an effective cure for illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, inflammation, infections, cancer and aging issues.
Nowadays, with people desiring to have healthier lifestyles, are now looking at malunggay with more interest. Many products now incorporate malunggay: tea, capsules and tablets, sauces, pasta, breads, noodles, oil, soap, lotion, powder and many others.
And finally, the House committee on revisions on law approved HB 2072, a bill declaring malunggay as the national vegetable of the Philippines and the month of November as the “National Malunggay Month.”
Pangasinan Rep. Ma. Georgina P. de Venecia, author of HB 2072, grew up eating the “miracle vegetable” and “nature’s medicine cabinet” everyday in Ilocos.
“Malunggay is one of the important plants that deserve national and international promotion due to the many bio-medical endowment and numerous socio-economic benefits that can be derived from it,” said de Venecia, citing that the plant can save lives, increase income, generate millions of jobs, utilize vast tracts of agricultural lands, make the Philippines globally competitive, impact local and international market, and help attain socio-economic equity.
HB 2072 tasks the Secretaries of the Departments of Agriculture, Education, Health and the chairman of the National Commission for Culture and Arts, to draft the rules and regulations for the implementation of the Act.
The Department of Agriculture is expanding the local market for malunggay and its products to enhance the agribusiness potentials of various crops as part of the government’s poverty alleviation and health care programs.
Manila Nature’s Link Corp. (MNLC), the creator and distributor of Malungai Life Oil, the world’s first and only product developed from pure moringa oleifera (malunggay) seeds and leaves, has redefined malunggay in the most potent way possible and perfected the extraction of malunggay seeds and leaves through technological standards at par with the best in the world.
Founder Andy Lugtu shares that the oil of malunggay can be used to cook many dishes. He added other culinary uses of malunggay: malunggay pasta, malunggay pesto sauce, malunggay burgers, malunggay fritters or crunchy malunggay, as well as using the malunggay pods on gravies and pasta sauces. #

Arrowstorm Entertainment’s “Saga: Curse of the Shadow” that was filmed with a much lower budget compared to other fantasy adventure films has steadily gained favorable traction from younger movie going audience due to its straightforward storytelling, ruthless heroine and unapologetic visual style.
Starred in by the enigmatic Irish actor Richard McWilliams and rising young star Dani Chuchran (whose acting credits include “Dr Suess’ The Cat in the Hat” and “The Wild Stallion”), “Saga: Curse of the Shadow” is directed by John Lyde where a ruthless elven bounty huntress Nemyt (Chuchran) shoots down the dragon ridden by the fugitive orc shaman, Fangtor Bloodmoon. When Fangtor refuses to surrender quietly, the huntress must battle for her own life against the dangerous villain, and comes away with more than just his head.
In the movie, Chuchran plays a ruthless heroine named Nemyt who pairs up with Keltus (McWilliams) an agent of the ruling Order, is on the trail of the enigmatic Shadow cult. He reports to a local garrison to interrogate a captured Shadow cultist, but finds the man dead - murdered by Nemyt, an elven bounty huntress cursed with the Mark of the Shadow - an undead plague. Nemyt has learned of a secret meeting and a powerful treasure. Keltus frees her from prison and the two set out to rendezvous with the cult.
En route, the pair team up with Kullimon the Black, an infamous orc raider. The three heroes must battle undead creatures, river dragons, swamp monsters, gun-totting dwarves and a horde of orcs in order to reach the meeting point, where their plan for Nemyt to pose as a Shadow Agent goes horribly wrong. Nemyt is captured and the real Shadow Agent escapes with the treasure, which he will use at the Well of Demons to raise an Undead God.
Keltus and Kullimon battle their way to the Well, freeing Nemyt in the process. The Shadow Cult has completed a hellish ritual and a massive demon rises from the Abyss. The heroes defeat the fiery demon in an epic duel, banishing it to the Underworld, and save the realm from the undead menace.

There’s something that Jewel (Anne Hathaway) did not talk about with Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) in the first “Rio” family adventure outing – that is her childhood friend named Roberto (Bruno Mars). In the upcoming adventure 3D movie “Rio 2,” Blu is suddenly pitted against Jewel’s childhood friend, Roberto who is the epitome of a Blue Macaw - a perfect specimen of a wild bird who charms everyone around him and makes Blu self-conscious.
Bruno Mars joins the vividly delightful and upbeat musical world of Blu and Jewel in “Rio 2” where director Carlos Saldanha brings the adventure into the wild thick forest of the Amazon. With the success of “Rio” the call for a sequel came quickly. Having already teased a new life together for Blu and Jewel – and their three new arrivals – in the film’s finale, Saldanha pitched his idea for a new story. What if Blu and his family aren’t the last Blue Macaws, he posited. What would happen to the family dynamic?
Saldanha decided to set his new story in the mammoth Brazilian wilderness. “I wanted a setting very different from the one we explored in ‘Rio,’ he explains. “I thought we should move away from the city.” So, in “Rio 2,” it’s on…in the Amazon, not only visually, but musically. “We wanted to look at different musical ‘flavors,’ sounds and exciting new beats that make the soundtrack for “Rio 2” even bigger than the first film’s,” says the director.
If meeting a critical father-in-law, Eduardo (Andy Garcia) weren’t enough, Blu must also contend with Jewel’s childhood friend Roberto, played by Bruno Mars. “Roberto is pretty much the opposite of Blu – all charm and suaveness – and he can sing like an angel,” says Hathaway. Eisenberg notes that, “Roberto and Jewel have a history and an almost secret language. So Blu feels not only threatened by Roberto, but is frustrated because Roberto seems like the perfect guy. Everything he does is heroic – and he’s a great singer!”
Roberto owes his vocal prowess to the music icon who voices him: Bruno Mars. The Grammy winner, who has sold over 115 million records worldwide and has a catalog of 22 Hot 100 hits as a singer, producer and songwriter, enjoyed his first foray into feature animation. “I like that Roberto has a good heart,” Mars explains. “He’s a genuine dude and he really has love for Jewel – genuine love. They grew up together, so they have a bond that’s pretty special.”
The filmmakers considered a long list of candidates for the role, but a Mars appearance on “Saturday Night Live” helped sealed the deal. “I saw a clip of Bruno acting on SNL, and I thought he was really funny,” Saldanha remembers. Producer John C. Donkin notes that casting Mars “transformed our thinking about the character. He added a unique quality we initially hadn’t envisioned for Roberto, which we came to embrace, and the character really blossomed.”
If Roberto’s looks, talent and friendship with Jewel weren’t intimidating enough for Blu, the songbird hosts the clan in his magnificent mansion, located in one of the Amazon’s most impressive trees. Interweaving roots create open pockets, perfect for rooms housing Blu and his family. As the family settles into this exciting new world, Blu finds his learning curve to be a steep one.
Bruno Mars lends his signature vocal stylings to the track “Welcome Back,” in which his character Roberto expresses his joy in reuniting with Jewel. The song was written by Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence and John Powell, and produced by Bruno Mars and John Powell.
“Rio 2” (in 2D and 3D) will open April 9 (Saturday) nationwide in cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

From the producers of “Pride and Prejudice,” Jason Faller and Kynan Griffin of Arrowstorm Entertainment write and produce “Saga: Curse of the Shadow,” a sci-fi adventure thriller tracking a female bounty hunter on a mission to stop a cult to raise the god of the Undead.
Starring Dani Chuchran as Nemyt Willowhaven, a tormented elven bounty huntress to infiltrate a cabal known as The Shadow. In the movie a man named Keltus (Richard McWilliams), an agent of the ruling Order, is on the trail of the enigmatic Shadow cult.
“One of our primary concerns with the film was the Kullimon character – a living, breathing orc that the audience can root for, and come to love” said producer, Jason Faller. “Whereas video gamers play orc characters all the time, we’ve never seen a sympathetic orc on film before. I think Special Effects Make-Up Supervisor, Chris Hanson, nailed it though and I’m excited for fans of the genre to experience Kullimon.”
The movie’s unapologetically lush look is credited to costume and design supervisor Anne Black for the handsome production values. “She has a beautiful eye and is a stickler for quality,” he said. “I think costume and production design in general is often the downfall of many indie productions. The lack of quality sets and costumes make a film look cheap. We focus on what ends up on screen and spend the money on those elements.”
Griffin said he and his partners are “interested in re-creating the experience that role-playing gamers encounter every day. So much fantasy cinema deals with kings and princesses saving the world, whereas gamers deal with a small group of heroes of different skill sets. Different races like dwarves, elves and orcs band together on quests for fortune and glory. It is a much more personal world, where anyone can become a hero, rather than just ‘the chosen one.’”
Check out the film’s official trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5p4w7rUptE and more news from its official FB page http://www.facebook.com/crystalskymultimedia

Blue Sky’s Studios’ Blue Macaws and friends from the worldwide hit “Rio” are back for a grander adventure into the Amazon in “Rio 2” where music beats faster and louder with the returning cast Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Oscar and Grammy winner Jamie Foxx, will.i.am, Jemaine Clement along new voice cast members - Oscar® nominee Andy Garcia, Grammy® winner Bruno Mars, Tony® winner Kristin Chenoweth and Oscar/Emmy®/Tony winner Rita Moreno. “Rio 2” also features new Brazilian artists and original music by Janelle Monae and Wondaland.
Helmed by Carlos Saldanha, Jewel convinces Blu to check out Linda and Tulio’s discovery that there might still be other Blue Macaws in the thick forest of the Amazon after seeing a single blue feather while trekking the forest.
We then catch up with Blu, Jewel and their three kids, all of whom have settled into life in Rio. They experience the comforts and conveniences of city dwelling. Blu remains as domesticated as ever, but Jewel is concerned that the children are becoming more like humans than birds, and that they may never know how to be birds.
When Jewel decides the kids need to learn to live like real birds, she insists the family venture to the Amazon. Blu tells his buddies of his travel plans, but Nico, Pedro and Luiz warn him of the myriad dangers that could lie ahead in the wild. But the ever-positive Rafael encourages Blu, reminding him that “a happy wife means a happy life!”
Anne Hathaway explains: “Jewel grew up in the jungle and the kids are being raised in Rio, so there’s definitely more of a human influence on them. They listen to music players, eat pancakes and watch TV. Jewel is not the biggest fan of that kind of domesticity.”
Blue and Jewel’s adventurous triplets are a jungle of a character themselves – Carla, Tiago and Bia. Singer/actress/comedian Rachel Crow voices the eldest of the triplets, Carla, a spunky teen who longs to get a little space from her protective family so she can express her musical side. Like her father Blu, Carla not so keen at first to go with her family into the wild but in an instant changed her mind when she learns that her cool uncles Nico and Pedro are joining the adventure. Eventually, Carla helps her Uncles put up the most musical and vibrant carnival show in the Amazon where she has also blossomed as a musical talent. Very much her father’s daughter, Bia (voiced by “The Hunger Games’” Amandla Stenberg) is as domesticated and lives with her beak in a book and likes spouting facts and figures like Blu. But when she gets to the Amazon, she is inspired by its awe and wonder. For once, she puts down her books and experiences the colorful life around her. Tiago, the youngest and only boy of the triplets is voiced by Pierce Gagnon, is always up for adventure, especially if it involves destroying something.
Upon their arrival at the heart of the Amazon, Blu and Jewel meet the locals, including Eduardo (Andy Garcia), a larger than life patriarch with a firm set of rules, who becomes a comedic obstacle for Blu; Mimi (Rita Moreno), Eduardo’s warm and sassy sister, who likes to speak her mind, even to her overbearing brother; and Roberto (singer-songwriter-record producer Bruno Mars), a perfect specimen of a wild bird who charms everyone around him and makes Blus elf-conscious. As Blu tries to fit in, he worries he may lose Jewel and the kids to the call of the wild.
Saldanha envisioned a mini-travelogue that would get the characters from Rio to the Amazon swiftly and show his beloved Brazil in a fun way. To mark the journey, the filmmakers devised an unfolding map and pop-up map, as well as some GPS imagery, all presented in a stylized way. As the sequence progresses, the scene weaves back and forth between the real world and the paper pop-up world. Finally arriving at their destination – the largest jungle in the world – the family takes in the marvels of the Amazon: massive trees of all types, the limitless flora and fauna, and giant rivers. It is a much bigger canvas, and thus more challenging to render than building the city of Rio in the first film.“We wanted to capture the vibe of the forest and its harmony, with nature and with animals,” comments Saldanha.
“Rio 2” (in 3D and 2D) opens nationwide on April 9 (Saturday) from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

20th Century Fox has just released new photos from the upcoming “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” the most epic and action-packed X-Men to-date.
Back at the helm of a blockbuster film franchise he helped launch, Bryan Singer directs “X-Men: Days of Future Past” where mutants are fighting for survival in a dark future where the robotic Sentinels have been slowly wiping them. The mutants look to time travel to help their younger selves stop this awful timeline from coming to pass. Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), having the ability to instantly heal, is the one chosen to endure the strain of travelling back in time.
The Sentinels, created by Bolivar Trask (played by “Game of Thrones’” Peter Dinklage) is an unprecedented technology designed to hunt and kill mutants. Son of the wealthy son of industrialist Larry Trask, Bolivar believes that mutants are a threat to human existence, so he took it upon himself to preserve humanity with his Sentinel program. Dinklage, in recent interviews, shares, “I didn’t want to play the villain. He’s a man of science. He’s a man of invention. He actually sees what he’s doing as a good thing — [his ambition is] definitely blind and he’s quite arrogant. He’s strove all his life for a certain respect and attention.”
“X-Men: Days of Future Past” will open in Phils. cinemas nationwide on May 21 from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
Soon to be released in Ayala Cinemas, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” recently broke U.S. box-office records for being the highest-grossing limited live action debut of all time to-date. With its limited release, the movie is now crowned as the most successful art-house release and that of Anderson’s most successful debut so far with an $800,000 weekend box-office bow.
Directed by world acclaimed filmmaker Wes Anderson, “Grand Budapest Hotel” is a caper dramedy that stars a powerhouse cast including Ralph Fiennes, Tony Revolori, F. Murray Abraham, Adrien Brody, Willem Defoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Bull Murray, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Tilda Swinton, Bob Balaban, Tom Wilkinson and Owen Wilson.
“The Grand Budapest Hotel” recounts the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars; and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting; a raging battle for an enormous family fortune; and the sweetest confection of a love affair – all against the backdrop of a suddenly and dramatically changing Continent.
Anderson set his tale in a fictional spa town in the imaginary country of alpine Zubrowka, for which he created not only a complete visual aesthetic but also a cohesive 20th Century history mirroring Eastern Europe, with a fascist takeover in the thirties and a Communist period after that –but also a more distant past in the vein of the belle epoque.
“Every time Wes makes a film, it’s a whole world, and there’s a whole universe to be created along with it,” says producer Jeremy Dawson, who has worked with Anderson on “Moonrise Kingdom,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” and “The Darjeeling Limited.” “Here, he has created an entirely fictional part of Eastern Europe known as The Republic of Zubrowka, and in Zubrowka we find one of those great spa towns that cropped up all over before the turn of the century. The story really came from his interest in that time period, that history, that world; and also a certain type of character who is our Monsieur Gustave, the concierge at this grand hotel. So his idea of both the character and this entire world merged together, and Wes turned out this great script. Then the script, the acting and direction all combined to become something different even than it was on the page.”
"The Grand Budapest Hotel" will be shown exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas nationwide starting April 19 (Black Saturday).

A film about a woman impregnated with…something powerful and evil, and dealing with horrific consequences is the “Devil’s Due.”
In “Devil’s Due,” a young couple, Zach McCall (Zach Gilford) and Samantha (Allison Miller) is about to tie the knot. A bright future lies ahead for them – and after an emotional wedding ceremony, they take off for a honeymoon in the sun-kissed Dominican Republic. Their trip takes a bizarre turn after an uncomfortable session with a psychic, who ominously warns the couple that “he has been waiting.” More than a little taken aback by the encounter, Zach and Sam find themselves lost on some dark and empty streets when they finally find a cab driver, who insists on driving them to a subterranean bar for an “autentico” Dominican Republic experience. Then, things get really unsettling.
Sam and Zach soak up the unusual surroundings – as well as copious quantities of alcohol. Along the way, fleeting glimpses of disturbing images accompany them from the revelry: a heap of bones, a grinning skull, a hideous flash of a limp and bloody female body, muffled voices…and a low, insistent chanting. Flash forward to the next morning. The newlyweds remember little of the previous night’s events. Shortly after their return home, Sam learns she is pregnant. Despite the surprising news, the couple makes plans for an addition to their new family.
Soon, however, disturbing clues emerge that their situation is anything but normal: an ultrasound exam and amniocentesis take a troubling turn; on a grocery shopping expedition, Sam, a vegetarian, crams raw, bloody meat into her mouth; in a shopping mall parking lot, she cracks the rear window of a car with a strength and ferocity that doesn’t seem possible for a woman several months pregnant; and her belly seems to stretch and contort, as if the baby is pushing from the inside with extreme force.
Along with the scares, the filmmakers focus on the two lead characters. “The style of the movie allows you to be involved in the relationship between Zach and Sam in a really intimate and almost voyeuristic way,” says director Bettinelli-Olpin. “And we wanted to own the pregnancy from the start; we didn’t want to hide it and make you wait. So, the scene where Sam is impregnated is about 15 minutes into the movie.” Casting the two leads was a key element in the filmmakers’ goal to bring audiences into Sam and Zach’s world and their increasingly dire circumstances. Zach Gilford’s “everyman” likability – so evident in his signature role as high school football quarterback Matt Saracen in the acclaimed TV series Friday Night Lights – is on full display in “Devil’s Due.” And, says Gillett, “Allison Miller was one of the first people we auditioned, and she blew us away. We just fell in love with her, and with Zach; it never feels like they’re acting.”
Filmed on location in the Dominican Republic, at Carnivale and various other sites, including a nightclub in a ruined catacomb, where Zach and Sam spend the fateful final night of their honeymoon, the production then moved to New Orleans, where most of principal photography took place.
Directing quartet Radio Silence embraced the typical scheduling constrains that befall some genre fare shot with “guerilla-style” filmmaking. “We felt like we had an abundance of time and money, just based on the films we’ve made in the past,” says Gillett. “The biggest challenge was getting people on board for how we wanted to make the movie. “So it was more about giving everyone the sense that we’re a part of this together, so let’s jump in and have fun with it.”
Still, no amount of experimentation could address some of the unexpected challenges during production, including a tornado that blew through the church set, which not only had the production scrambling to reschedule the day’s shoot, but had the cast and crew hiding in the building’s stairwells to avoid the fearsome winds.
Later, there was a fire – on the same set. “Just the fact that it was happening in a church, and we’re making a movie about the Anti-Christ, was just kind of creepy,” says Bettinelli-Olpin. “To this day, it makes me smile every time I think about it.”
“Devil’s Due” opens March 19 in theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
LEED Inc.’s vision to create a sustainable, eco-friendly environment takes a step further to fruition with the opening of their model units at the site of their first real estate project: Paseo Verde along Real St., Pulang Lupa Uno in Las Pinas City.
Paseo Verdo is a 1.1 Hectare mid-rise condominium development which boasts to set a green standard of living for its owners. The model units: 24.70sqm and 29.5sqm studio units; 38.25 one-bedroom; 51.13 two-bedroom, and a 66.55 three-bedroom, all depict an eco-friendly way of life for its future residents.
All units are designed to invoke nature with the use of natural materials such as wooden accents and flooring. Walls are also painted with light colors to maximize natural illumination coming in from every unit’s large windows. Wooden mobile cabinets also adorn these spaces, and the design is consistent to that of a charming and homey cabin.
The units also make use of recycled construction materials – doors and jambs are made from recycled wood, a small step in preserving our forest / nature giving the development a rustic feel as well.
The model units also give ideas on how to efficiently use space in condo living. The studio unit for example, makes use of a cabinet as both storage for the ref, and extra storage area for other things. This same cabinet is used as mount for the tv, while a half round table set against a wall serves both a compact dining area, or instant bar during small gatherings.
Outdoor green features
Aside from the units, Paseo Verde is set to offer exceptional Green Features that define the whole project. These are amenities that focus on their groundbreaking green architecture and puts emphasis to the company’s three environment focus: Climate Change, the Clean Air Act, and the Safety and Health of its Residents.
First is the use of energy-efficient streetlights that illuminate the gated community’s grounds. The lights don’t make use of any electricity at all, and gets energy from solar panels.
Next is the rain catchment facility, which allows the whole development to make use of recycled rain water for grounds upkeep. Water from rainfalls is used to clean the surrounding, and water the green patches that make-up the lifestyle facilities. Paseo Verde at Real also has a unique ‘rain garden’ located under the property’s cistern – this serves as a natural water filter which means less water waste is thrown out of the drainage system, and in turn, lessening the chances of floods in surrounding areas during the tropical storm season.
The layout of all three towers also ensure that indoor air quality is at its best: Pocket gardens that open to large air pockets in the middle of every residential floor ensure that fresh air circulate freely around the building. This removes the stifling feeling often associated with most condo developments.
The most unique feature of Paseo Verde at Real are the bike facilities that will be made available upon construction. Aside from bike lanes, there will be permanent bike racks where lovers of the activity can park their equipment safely.
Biking will definitely be promoted by the project as they also put charging stations for e-bikes – a mode of transportation that will be encouraged for older residents.
Future homeowners will be encouraged to take public transportation through nearby transportation hubs located near the community, the proposed LRT Extension station connecting the South to other transit facilities is also a stone’s throw away. This makes it easy to move around strategic parts of the city.
Check out the Paseo Verde model units by visiting the site today. Paseo Verde at Real is accredited by the Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence (BERDE) and a member of the Philippine Green Building Council for its steps towards promoting a sustainable community. The first tower turnover is scheduled in October, 2015. For more information, please call 854-1652

Mr. Brian Poe, Head of the Research Team—Office of Senator Grace Poe- Llamanzares
The 40 candidates of the Binibining Pilipinas celebrated International Women’s Day last March 8 at the Gateway Cinema 5 in a film showing of documentary Girl Rising sponsored by SPARK Philippines Inc (Samahan ng Mga Pilipina para sa Reporma at Kaunlaran), J. Amado Araneta Foundation, and the Araneta Center.
The movie featured the inspiring stories of nine girls all over the world who were born into unforgiving circumstances but overcame adversity. The event also hosted thought-provoking talks on women empowerment from Ms. Czarina Medina-Guce, Executive Director, Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines; Mr. Brian Poe- Llamanzares, Head of the Research Team—Office of Senator Grace Poe- Llamanzares; Bai Rohaniza Sumndad-Usman, Founder, Teach Peace Build Peace Movement; and Zorayda Amelia Alonzo, SPARK Philippines Inc. President.
As representatives of the Philippines to the most prestigious pageants worldwide, the Binibinis embody Filipinas’ strength and character and are champions of women empowerment. In an interview, the girls share their thoughts on women’s rights, gender equality and International Women’s Day.
What can women do for society?
“Women can do a lot of things in society, and we are privileged to be living in an age where we can enjoy freedom to pursue things we want to do and achieve. For me, as a Binibini, I can inspire women to become better versions of themselves and we advocate women to be empowered Filipinas.”—Binibini No. 31 Angelique Celine De Leon
What are the biggest issues for women that we should address?
“I read somewhere that the Philippines is a hotbed for human trafficking, and women are the most susceptible to this. There are women who are being exploited and violated and they were not given the choice to say no. So I think we should promote projects to push awareness on human trafficking.”—Binibini No. 5 Hanna Mariz dela Guerra
What are your realizations this Women’s month?
“This day made me realize the importance of gender equality—that women deserve to be treated equally with men and that women are able and capable of reaching their dreams. As a girl who underwent struggles in my life, I keep these thoughts in mind to fuel me to achieve my goals.”—Binibini No. 36 Krystal Alonday
Who are the women you look up to?
“I work with Noraida Abdullah Karim in CFSI (Community and Family Services International) and she is someone I look up to. She is a multi-awarded social worker who specializes in psychosocial care, and she has helped counsel countless women and children who underwent traumatic experiences in war-torn Mindanao. I admire her because of her passion for the advocacy.”—Binibini No. 22 Mary Anne Bianca G. Guidotti
What can you say about gender equality in the Philippines?
“We are blessed that the Philippines is ranked number 5 in the world for gender equality based on a survey. But at the same time, there are still problems that need to be addressed like abuse in women. But it’s a good thing that we have programs that cater to the abused and empower women.”—Binibini No. 3 Joanna Angelica Romero
If you were to win Bb Pilipinas, what advocacy would you have for women?
“I want to have an organization that would foster and support sexually abused teenagers. Like a big sister-little sister project that would help the victims. Because of my exposure to so many news stories on rape and abuse, it became something I feel strongly about.”—Binibini No. 28 Carla Jenina Lizardo
As a beauty queen, how would you help promote women’s rights?
“I would advocate gender equality. Everyone should be treated with mutual respect. Your race, your religion, your culture, or where you’re from—these things shouldn’t matter. Women should have the freedom to achieve anything they want in life.”—Binibini No. 4 Parul Shah
What can you say about the women’s day festivities in the Philippines?
“I am happy that there is a day for women to be recognized and it’s also an important day for us to be aware of women’s issues. I think awareness is key to solve a lot of social issues women are facing.”—Binibini No. 1 Julian Aurine Flores
Candidate no. 4 Parul Shah shows off her support for education for women at the

Fast-rising to be one of Hollywood’s leading men, Rodrigo Santoro, a Brazilian native reprises his role as Tulio in “Rio 2,” from the globally beloved hit “Rio” where he plays an eccentric scientist opposite Leslie Mann’s character, Linda who owns Blu.
Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) and Linda (Mann) as seen in the first movie are living a simple life together in Minnesota who are both homebodies – explaining the very domesticated rare Macaw, Blu. Upon Tulio’s arrival, their lives are turned upside down bringing news that Blu is not the last of his kind – taking them both to Rio to meet Jewel (Anne Hathaway). Their adventure brings them further into the Amazon in “Rio 2” where Tulio and Linda who are now married have caught a blue feather floating on air while exploring the deep part of the jungle. The newlyweds are exploring the Amazon, where they discover there may be more Blue Macaws, and set out to find them.
To fully realize the scope and breadth of this magical new world and its vivid characters, Saldanha brought together once again all-star voice cast, led by Oscar® nominees Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, Oscar and Grammy®-winner Jamie Foxx, acclaimed musical artist will.i.am, actor-musician Jemaine Clement, comedic actress Leslie Mann, actor Rodrigo Santoro (a Brazilian native), actor-comedian George Lopez, and funnyman Tracy Morgan.
Now, filmmaker Saldanha returns to Brazil and reunites his beloved characters in “Rio 2.” In the new film, it’s a jungle out there for Blu, Jewel and their three kids, after they’re hurtled from Rio to the wilds of the Amazon. As Blu tries to fit in, he goes beak-to-beak with the vengeful and villainous Nigel, and meets the most fearsome adversary of all…his father-in-law.
Leslie Mann, who returns to voice Linda, describes the game-changing discovery: “From the sky, a little blue feather falls between Linda and Tulio. He tastes it and he realizes it’s a Blue Macaw feather. And they go off in search of more Blue Macaws.” Mann’s on-screen hubby, Rodrigo Santoro, who reprises the role of Tulio, notes that, “Linda and Tulio are still working hard to protect birds in Brazil. And they make a terrific couple because Tulio is a great thinker and Linda is a great ‘do-er.’”
Armed with the knowledge of Linda and Tulio’s finding, Jewel decides her family must pick up stakes and take a walk – make that flight – on the wild side. “In ‘Rio,’ we learned that Blu and Jewel were the last of their kind, but in the new film they learn they might not be –that there may be other Blue Macaws out there,” notes Hathaway. “So it becomes important to Jewel to find who’s out there in the Amazon. She’s thrilled there could be more like her and Blu.”
Rodrigo Santoro is one of Brazil's most talented and famous actors and started his career playing parts in RedeGlobo’s plays and went on to play parts in many of Globo’s telenovelas, such as “Olho no Olho,” “PátriaMinha,” “Explode Coração,” “O Amor Está no Ar,” “Suave Veneno” and “Mulheres Apaixonadas.” In 1998, he starred in the Brazilian miniseries “Hilda Furacão,” playing the role of a priest. Since then, Rodrigo has won a total of eight Best Actor awards, along with ten nominations. He has done a variety of work, starring in the popular Chanel No. 5 campaign with Nicole Kidman and voicing the title character in “Stuart Little” and its sequel in the Brazilian dubbed copies.
Rodrigo starred in “300,” playing Xerxes opposite Gerard Butler. The film, which was based on the Frank Miller's graphic novel of the same name, broke box office records throughout the world becoming the first Brazilian actor to be nominated for an MTV Movie Award®. He went on to roles in “The Last Stand,” with Arnold Schwarzenegger; the comedy “What to Expect When You’re Expecting”; and the upcoming films “Focus” and “300: Rise of an Empire,” in which he reprises his “300” role of Xerxes.
Rodrigo’s first American film was Sony’s “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” in which he starred as Randy Emmers. He’s also starred in Universal’s hit romantic comedy “Love Actually,” David Mamet’s “Redbelt,” Fox Searchlight’s “Post Grad,” and “I Love You Phillip Morris.” Rodrigo starred in “Behind the Sun,” which was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2002 Golden Globe Awards. He later starred in both Steven Soderbergh’s “Che” and Pablo Trapero’s “Lion’s Den,” both of which earned multiple nominations at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
A Twentieth Century Fox released Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studio’s CG animated feature, “Rio 2” opens April 9 in theaters nationwide in the Phils.
