Lenovo Heralds the Age of Mobile Work Environments

Lenovo presents Lenovo LAN School and Stoneware WebNetwork solutions at latest CIO Roundtable

Manila, Philippines: Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY), along with partners Intel and Absolute Software, affirmed during a recent CIO Roundtable that the borderless classrooms and offices without walls are indeed now upon us.

During the forum, Lenovo and its partners presented the Lenovo LAN School and the Stoneware webNetwork solutions. Both Lenovo solutions are powered by Absolute Software’s device management and tracking technology which allows IT administrators to manage a range of mobile products in a single platform.

The Lenovo LAN school is a classroom management software that allows teachers to monitor classroom activity, block unnecessary websites, and assess student learning in real-time. The system uses smartphones, phablets, tablets and laptops in a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) classroom setting, while Stoneware webNetwork allows users to access files, applications, reports from individual devices, and public & private clouds in a Unified Cloud.

Lenovo and its partners also discussed software and hardware issues of mobile environments in the context of the Philippines’ rising smartphone adoption and mobile application1. Lenovo Philippines Country General Manager Michael Ngan said, “The PC Plus era is in full swing. With the prevalence of PC Plus devices like convertibles, tablets, and smartphones, more small medium businesses (SMBs) and enterprises are adopting a location-agnostic work culture. There is a surge in demand for PC Plus gadgets in corporations. Lenovo has been addressing this through a slew of solutions for the PC Plus space in partnership with Intel and Absolute Software.”

Coping with the challenges of device management in enterprises

Harry Lau, an Absolute Software representative, noted that monitoring mobile devices simultaneously is a business challenge faced by mobile environments: “A single person can have three or four mobile devices. If you want to maintain good governance of your IT environment, you need to know what's happening to those devices, where they are being used, how they are being used, and who are using them.”

Absolute Software supports workplace mobility through its monitoring software, device management technology, and adaptable systems that cater to the Governance, Risk Management, and Compliance (GRC) product business. Absolute Software helps turn organizations’ productivity ‘down’ time into ‘found’ time.

New hardware for mobile environments

Apart from offering software solutions, Lenovo drives  growth and innovation by expanding into new form factors and device categories to support workplace mobility. Just recently, Lenovo launched the ThinkPad Helix and the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch to further amplify their competitive line-up of products. The ThinkPad Helix is a convertible that blends the portability of a tablet with the productivity of a PC while the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch is a business ultrabook, which has a thin and light design, enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity, and a long battery life. Both laptops feature cloud-computing capabilities that are fit for ‘road warriors’ and the highly mobile Filipino doers of today.

“With security features such as the Fingerprint Reader, Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and BIOS encryption, as well as a slew of data management features, Lenovo’s mobile solutions make executives location agnostics,” said Steven Cheng, Product Manager, Lenovo ASEAN.

With such devices and solutions in place, Lenovo is well positioned to meet the challenges in workplace mobility, a point echoed by Jermyn “Wowie” Wong, Market Development Manager, Intel Microelectronics Philippines, Inc. “As we move on from today, Lenovo’s innovative products, complimented with high performance Intel Core based processors, are well placed to make an ever bigger difference in addressing new concerns on mobility. The ThinkPad Helix and ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch are great examples of how two-in-one form factors help to address the mobility trend and workplace mobility.”

Paktor, Meeting New Friends is as Easy as Swipe, Match, and Chat

October 21, 2013 (Manila, Philippines): It’s a tricky business, expanding one’s circle of friends. Naturally, there’s a lot of work involved. One has to get out there, become acquainted with different groups of people, familiarize one’s self with the latest trends and, ultimately, be an adaptable and versatile individual. However, even the most sociable person will say that, sometimes, things don’t always turn out as expected. Encountering unscrupulous characters and enduring unpleasant circumstances are to be expected and are, oftentimes, unavoidable situations in the social jungle.

Still, disagreeable moments positively work toward enlightening and educating the individual. But wouldn’t it be so much better if these types of situations were greatly reduced in frequency?

 Raymond Gutierrez
In this day and age everyone is, in a digital sense, already out in the public. Social media has made the world a smaller place by connecting people and, in theory, making friends is easier now more than ever.

It is on this note that Paktor, the newest name in social networking, was developed. Launched in mid-June of 2013, Paktor is the brainchild of Joseph Phua and co-founders Christopher D’Cruz and Charlene Koh. A user-friendly app that allows people with similar interests to connect with one another, Paktor is built on the principles of locality, usability, and anonymity.

The first thing a Paktor user will notice when signing up is how easy it is to do so. Unlike other apps that require users to fill-up several fields of personal information, Paktor allows you to sign in directly through your Facebook account, without having to modify any of your existing information. All it takes is a simple two-click, 15-second process for new users to immediately browse for new friends. Additionally, those who have doubts about logging in through Facebook can be rest assured that Paktor will never post on your behalf on your Facebook wall, or require you to manipulate anything in your account.

Volcanoes Jake Letts and Harry Morris
Paktor’s lively and engaging graphical user interface also makes the experience more fun and easy; get to know people without having to read through lengthy, verbose profiles that may or may not be true. Users are also only able to view distance, friends in common, shared interests and additional photos before deciding if they would like to get to get know the person in the photo better.

The creators of Paktor believe that including the concept of locality in their app greatly increases the chances that people will actually meet. Other apps do not take into account the fact that users who are simply too far away from one another will find it difficult to set up actual meetings. Utilizing your smart phone’s built-in GPS, Paktor allows you to locate users within your area who share similar interests, making the possibility of actual face-to-face encounters that much more real.

Arguably the most important aspect of Paktor is that it places a very high premium on anonymity. Security and privacy concerns are a serious matter, so it’s appropriate that Paktor only allows people to meet once they have “liked” one another. Making a quick swipe to the right across someone’s profile lets them know that you have liked them, but this is only half of the process – the other party has to “like” you back before a match can be made. Furthermore, a user won’t know if they’re liked until they like someone. This is the key to Paktor’s privacy feature and is what allows users to search for friends freely, without getting bombarded by messages from just anyone. Once two parties have anonymously liked each other, a chat room immediately pops up, connecting them and allowing for free and relaxed interaction. This anonymity function provides a level of security unique to the Paktor experience.

There’s no doubt that technology nowadays is, in one way or another, a part of the daily lives of millions. In fact if you are reading this, there is a good chance that some form of mobile device is within reach. That gadget connects you to everyone you know. Theoretically speaking, it can also connect you to those whom you don’t. And with Paktor, making this connection is as easy as “swipe, match, and chat.”

For more about Paktor visit:

About Paktor

Paktor connects you with people nearby whom you’re interested in and it’s all anonymous until someone you like, likes you back. Paktor brings people together, no pressure attached. Founded in Singapore by Joseph Phua and co-founders Charlene Koh and Christopher D’Cruz, Paktor is the latest in mobile social networking.

In celebration of its 46th year, Repertory Philippines proudly announces the last production for its 76th theater season with THE PRODUCERS, the hilarious Broadway musical based on the 1968 Mel Brooks film of the same name.
Written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, with songs arranged by Glen Kelly and Doug Besterman, the original Broadway production of THE PRODUCERS (which opened at the St. James Theater on April 19, 2001 and starred Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick) won an unprecedented 12 Tony Awards, running for 2,502 performances. It spawned a successful London production running for just over two years, US national tours, many productions worldwide, and a 2005 film version.
THE PRODUCERS is about two wily theatrical producers who cook up a scheme to get rich by overselling interests in a Broadway flop. The humor of the show draws on ridiculous accents, homosexual stereotypes, and Nazis, along with many show business in-jokes. It is a satirical comedy that is deep enough for both insiders and outsiders of the theatre industry.
To be directed by Jaime del Mundo, the Manila premier of THE PRODUCERS will feature top caliber actors CARLO OROSA and ROBIE ZIALCITA alternating as Max Bialystock, the beleaguered producer facing bankruptcy, who woos little old ladies into backing his shows.
TOPPER FABREGAS takes on the role of Leopold “Leo” Bloom, a cowardly and infantile hapless accountant who first has the idea to produce a flop on purpose
Media icon G T├ľNGI will tackle the role of Ulla, a blonde Swedish bombshell who auditions for the show and becomes Max and Leo’s secretary/receptionist.
Actor-director JOEL TRINIDAD plays Franz Liebkind, a former Nazi whose play is chosen by Max and Leo as a definite flop.
Stage and screen veteran NOEL TRINIDAD (Joel’s father) takes on the role of Roger De Bris, the flamboyant  homosexual cross-dresser chosen to direct the show. He will be alternating with role of Roger with one of the icons of Philippine musical theater AUDIE GEMORA.
Versatile actor NOEL RAYOS will take the role of Carmen Ghia, Roger’s  “common law assistant.”
The ensemble is composed of  Nelsito Gomez, Steven Conde, Tristan Cheng, Jay Pangilinan, Chino Veguillas, Leroy de Guzman, Natalie Everett, David Shawn Delgado, Liesl Batucan, Mica Pineda, Shalee Vicencio, and Gemini Quintos.
Co-presented by the City of Makati, THE PRODUCERS is full of irreverent humor and show-stopping musical numbers, and is a must-see for all theater- and comedy-lovers.

Philips Kicks Off Innovations Campaign to Improve Lives of Filipinos

You can now submit your health innovation ideas at

Manila, Philippines – Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) has officially kicked off its “Innovations that Matter to You” campaign, which encourages people from all walks of life to submit ideas on how to address three of the most crucial problems of the country today – the need for livable cities; proper nutrition for families; and easier access to quality healthcare solutions.
The Philips Innovations campaign initially kicked off in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Korea, but has been launched in the Philippines to adhere to the company’s goal of providing people with meaningful solutions that can ultimately improve the quality of their lives. Additionally, the Philips Innovations campaign in the Philippines seeks to leverage on technology as an important tool in making life better for everyone.
Philips launched the first interactive mobile application about breast cancer in Indonesia last year. This 2013, the Philippines can be a part of this movement to bring health innovations to life.
“The Philips Innovations campaign is a call for people to innovate, to combine their ingenuity with technological resources, to develop health and well-being solutions that can benefit the public, especially those belonging to marginalized sectors,” said Fabia Tetteroo-Bueno, Country Manager of Philips in the Philippines. “As a technological innovator, we at Philips look forward to collaborating with them on making our communities safer places to live in, our families healthier, and giving our communities access to proper medical diagnosis and assessment, particularly in the area of non-communicable diseases.”
Submission of ideas can be done on the Innovations campaign website, which is scheduled to go live on September 23. Ideas should be realistic, impactful, and should fall under one of the three idea categories given. A select panel of subject matter experts shall then shortlist six ideas that meets Philips’ objective of creative positive change. The individuals/organizations behind these six suggestions will then undergo a mentorship workshop with some of the Philippines’ respected visionaries, to further fine-tune their ideas, and make them more actionable. Philips will then select one winning idea, and implement the chosen innovation in 2014.
As a company, Philips is focused on offering innovative products and services that help improve people’s health and well-being. This objective is actively supported by its three sectors – Lighting, Consumer Lifestyle, and Healthcare.

Big Cash Prizes Await Top Winners of Gardenia’s “The Next Big Sandwich Hit” competition

As Gardenia has been one of the leading and most known bread products in the Philippines, they will lead this special event to promote and give more importance to  this industry which is the second staple food of our country.

World Bread Day would not have existed had it not been for the declaration by the International Union of Bakers and Bakers-Confectioners in 2005, designating October 16 as the date to celebrate the simple mixture of flour and water, which when heated has become one of the world’s staple foods.

To commemorate this special global event, Gardenia Bakeries Philippines Inc. will be scouring for local culinary geniuses to concoct the “Next Big Sandwich Hit.”

Targeting 10 universities with courses related to hotel and restaurant management and the culinary arts, Gardenia’s “The Next Big Sandwich Hit” is pitting 50 students from these schools to come up with sandwich creations that will knock the socks off anyone who bites into them.

Participants will be chosen from 10-minute video auditions coming from a team of two who will prepare sandwiches embodying two themes from the following fun categories: Hell Week, Free Cut, Fuel Up and Good Morning. They will demo their sandwich-making skills using any two loaf variants from Gardenia Classic White Bread, Gardenia High Fiber Wheat Bread, Gardenia High Fiber Wheat Raisin Loaf, Gardenia Wheat Cranberry Loaf and Gardenia Slim ‘n Fit Wheaten Bread.

Five teams from each of the 10 participating schools will advance to the qualifying rounds where they will battle it out for the chance to represent their school in the finale.

In nail-biting, reality-TV style, winners will be judged through online votes, a taste test, the use of a sponsored ingredient, how much money they make on the food kiosk challenge at Mercato Centrale and their creation of 3 main sandwiches.

The Finale Challenge will be held during Gardenia’s own Happy Bread Day festivities at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati on October 28, 2013.

The top winner will receive P200,000 in cash and prizes; second and third place winners stand to win cash and prizes worth P70,000 and P35,000, respectively.

For participants and onlookers alike, the competition will be nothing short on excitement. It tests culinary creativity, marketing skills, online social media presence, on-ground presence of mind and the ability to make us salivate for “The Next Big Sandwich Hit.”

So as countries around the world celebrate World Bread Day, Gardenia’s “The Next Big Sandwich Hit” challenge definitely showcases not only culinary ingenuity and creativity but in how we appreciate bread—the one food eaten by people of every race, culture and religion—with a distinctive Pinoy style.
