Bohol to hold travel fair in Glorietta Mall Dec. 8-10

AirAsia’s super low fares to Bohol and bargain hotel and tour deals are up for grabs!

Beach2 Bohol is moving to become the must-go destination in the Philippines as it launches   new and exciting tourist destinations with rock bottom prices for airfares, hotels and resorts during a travel fair to be held in Glorietta Mall on Dec. 8-10.

Bohol provincial governor Edgar Chatto said the province will also formally launch its new branding “Behold...BOHOL,” which positions the province as a destination that exudes a sense of awe in every visitor.

The 3 day event is the first time ever that tourism sector in Bohol comes  together in a massive campaign to entice tourists to visit. It is part of the

Bohol Tourism Action Plan developed through the collaboration with  The United States Agency for International Development through its Advancing Philippine Competitiveness Project (USAID-COMPETE), the Department of Tourism (DOT), the United Nations-World Tourism Organization (UN-WTO), and the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) as well as local tourism stakeholders.

Meanwhile, the new branding “Behold...BOHOL” was developed with the help of CNN’s branding expert Anita Mendiratta.  Bohol is the first province that benefited from an outreach program of CNN.

AirAsia, the leading budget airline in the Asian region, is the exclusive airline partner for the campaign and will offer seat sale.  The airline that has been awarded the Skytrax’s World’s Best Low Cost Carrier for six consecutive years is also committed to offer year-round low fares for flights between Manila - Tagbilaran (Bohol) and Manila – Cebu.

At least 50% discount in accommodation, tours and other travel essentials in Bohol will be offered during the three-day travel fair. Boholano products will likewise be on sale.

The travel fair will open in a grand program featuring the world-famous Loboc Children’s Choir. The chorale group will have a nightly concert during the three-day event.

Bohol province is dubbed as the eco-cultural tourism capital with its fascinating  Chocolate Hills, pristine and white sand beaches in Panglao and  Anda.  It is also home to the well-loved Tarsier, considered the smallest and oldest primate in the world.

“We want to develop Bohol as the tourism superpower and a top holiday destination in the Philippines,” said Bohol governor Edgar Chatto.

He said the launch of the 'Behold... BOHOL'  aims to promote the province as a complete tourist destination because every town has a unique tourist attraction to offer to visitors.

Aside from the iconic destinations, the province is surrounded by caves, tranquil rivers, fascinating water falls, marine sanctuaries, mangroves and diving sites.

Chatto said Bohol is now promoting the powdery white sand beaches of Anda, as the next tourist destination.  Road and infrastructure access to Anda are underway through the convergence program of Department of Tourism and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) that seeks to connect airports to tourist destinations.

Anda is a must visit in Bohol for its  unique and  wider coastlines making it a perfect destination both for relaxing walk on the beach or water sports activities.

The town is also home to the Lamanok Mystical Island and is fast becoming a popular destinations. Lamanok can be reached within a two-hour drive from the capital, Tagbilaran. The island has a rich lush mangrove protecting the community from flooding, pollution and water surge. It hosts some mystical caves where ancient Boholanons bury their loved ones in jars.

Governor Chatto said Bohol is also home to Asia's largest mangrove forest called Banacon located north of the municipality of Getafe. It has a total of 425 hectares with only 15 hectares dry land and the rest are extensive mangrove plantation.

In a press statement, the Governor credited the strong support and cooperation of  tourism stakeholders in Bohol in promoting the new tourist destinations of the province.

“ The strong partnership between the local government and the private tourism stakeholders, a well equipped manpower with innate hospitality as well as the rich natural, cultural and historical attractions of Bohol are the three main factors why we are confident to become a tourism superpower,” said Chatto.

AirAsia, the Filipino Low Cost Carrier is fully supporting the ‘Behold...BOHOL’  campaign by offering its lowest possible rates for tourists visiting Bohol.

AirAsia, the world’s best low cost airline flies three times daily to Bohol

liam hemsworth in mockingjay part1 (1)War is on in the world’s most awaited survival game onscreen, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” that reveals for the first time the most covert place in all of Panem: secretive District 13, where Panem’s rebels have carved out their own rigidly ordered society miles underground.

District 13 and The Capitol are mirror opposites in every way. The Capitol is sensationalist spectacles, over-the-top garish hues and gleaming lights. District 13 is steeped in shades of gray, claustrophobia, conformity and the stark reality of what’s happening in the Districts. While The Capitol has been living high on the hog off the people, District 13 has been biding its time, preparing for the day when they would finally take a stand.

Up until now, only The Capitol knew about District 13, having carved out a non-aggression treaty that allowed it to exist so long as it stayed underground. As rumblings of war begin in earnest, District 13 and The Capitol are pitted against each other in a battle of images designed to win support – and key to it all is the ultimate District 13 symbol and foe of The Capitol: the Mockingjay.

Meet the District’s fearless warriors, returning and new characters who are about to take back their long-overdue freedom from President Snow’s authoritative rule.

Gale Hawthorne:

From the moment Katniss wakes up in District 13, Gale is there – one of her only touchstones to the world she left behind. But he, too, is no longer the same. A hero who saved hundreds during the destruction of their home in District 12, he is now becoming a dedicated soldier in the rebellion and yet his heart is as unsettled by Katniss as ever. Returning in the role is Liam Hemsworth, who says that in the wake of Catching Fire events, Gale “has reached the tipping point.” Hemsworth explains: “He’s had enough as far as The Capitol’s abuse goes, so he’s not scared to stand up to it. He feels ready to go to war, in spite of the costs, to try to take down The Capitol.”

Haymitch Abernathy:

Woody Harrelson returns as a very different Haymitch – one who has not only been changed by recent events but taken some time to recover with a stint in rehab. It gives him a clearer view of what matters. “Haymitch’s thing before was always to emotionally detach himself from the people he was mentoring,” explains Harrelson. “He truly sees how much he loves Katniss and Peeta, and he realizes they’ve become a kind of family to him, in a very real sense.”

Effie Trinket:

Elizabeth Banks returns as Effie Trinket in a greatly expanded role. Effie’s presence is one of few departures from the book. With Suzanne Collins as enamored about Banks’ bubbling-over portrait of Effie as movie fans, it was a change that came with the author’s blessing. Recalls Francis: “When Suzanne saw Catching Fire she called and said ‘There’s no way Effie Trinket cannot be in the Mockingjay films.’ Effie brings such warmth, fun and levity to these dark stories – and fans will love how she has adapted to life in District 13.”

Tech-savvy former tribute Beetee, having barely survived the Quarter Quell, now pushes his master hacking skills to the edge as he becomes a vital part of the rebellion’s plans to breach the mega-security of The Capitol. Jeffrey Wright takes on the character he describes as “resisting injustice.”

Wright explains where Beetee is now that he is recovering from the Games in District 13. “You really get to see Beetee in action working in his laboratory designing systems and weapons and trying to hack into The Capitol’s communications,” says the actor. “He has a very critical role in the advancement of the rebellion.”Although, Beetee has his own reservations. “He has a lot of outrage at the conditions in the Districts but, like Katniss, he also is struggling not to become the very thing he is fighting against,” says Wright.

Finnick Odair:

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 also finds former tribute Finnick Odair in an unstable state following the events of the Quarter Quell. Once renown across Panem for his gleaming smile and high-spirits, Finnick now collides with ghastly news at the start of the film. “Finnick finds out that the love of his life, Annie Cresta, has been kidnapped alongside Peeta and Johanna,” Sam Claflin, who debuted in the charismatic role in Catching Fire, explains. “That puts him in a very, very vulnerable position, and he doesn't really know how to deal with that loss.”

Claflin goes on: “What's incredible about Mockingjay is that it picks up at a point when everything has changed drastically, and every character you care about has seemingly gone to hell and back. They hoped that they had escaped from their lives as tributes, but they're actually confined even tighter. Now, they’re in this very regimented, new world of District 13 and it is quite disorienting. I see Finnick as being very broken at the beginning of Mockingjay, but he starts to find his feet again.”

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” opens November 20 in theatres nationwide from Pioneer Films.

Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the rest of the beloved “Peanuts” gang make their big-screen debut, like they’ve never been seen before, developed with the latest breakthrough in 3D animation. Snoopy, the world’s most lovable beagle – and flying ace – embarks upon his greatest mission as he takes to the skies to pursue his arch-nemesis The Red Baron, while his best pal, Charlie Brown, begins his own epic quest. From the imagination of Charles M. Schulz and the creators of the Ice Age films, “The Peanuts Movie” will prove that every underdog has his day.

Watching Peanuts come together has brought on a flood of childhood memories for the filmmakers. Because of the deep bench of Peanuts characters, the movie won't be introducing newcomers. In addition to Charlie Brown's crush-worthy Little Red Haired Girl and Snoopy's love Fifi, fans can expect Snoopy's brother Olaf, as well as a whole group of Beagle Scouts. In a recent interview with USA Today, producer Paul Feig shares, "You love being back in that world," "And you immediately want to grab every kid you know and go, 'Oh, my God, you've got to watch this!' "

“The Peanuts Movie” (3D) will open in cinemas November 2015 from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Mayhem breaks out in New York’s Museum of Natural History as Ben Stiller’s night security guard Larry Daley and his historical pals embark on an epic and thrilling expedition to London.

Directed once again by Shawn Levy, “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” is the third and most exciting of the hugely popular family films about Larry’s adventures with legendary leaders, warriors, mythological figures and dinosaurs.

An ancient tablet brings the artifacts to life when the sun goes down. But the magic has gone awry and the characters are malfunctioning, with catastrophic (and hilarious) results. Larry and his friends have to take drastic action. Robin Williams again portrays US President Teddy Roosevelt in one of his final film roles. Ricky Gervais is back as museum director, Dr. McPhee.

Greeting the year 2015 with lots of action and adventure for the entire family, “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” opens January 8 in theatres nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

The most ambitious and biggest theatrical event is about to happen in the Philippines when “Exodus: Gods and Kings” opens December 5 in cinemas nationwide – presented in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D format.

Crafted by world-acclaimed master filmmaker Ridley Scott (“Alien,” “Gladiator,” “Prometheus,” “Black Hawk Down”), who brings to life Ancient Egypt at the time of Moses using only the latest state of the art visual effects and 3D immersion. Starring Christian Bale as Moses, this all-audience epic adventure is the story of one man’s daring courage to take on the might of a powerful empire. In the movie, Scott recreates the story of the defiant leader Moses as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses (portrayed by Joel Edgerton), setting 400,000 slaves on a monumental journey out of Egypt and its terrifying prophecies of the deadly plagues.

Bringing one of the oldest story known to man, Scott brings to the fore the grandest film ever created on screen, the film also stars Sigourney Ben Kingsley, Aaron Paul, Indira Varma and John Turturro. Producing with Scott are Peter Chernin, Mark Huffam, Michael Schaefer, Jenno Topping and Adam Somner - waited for the right technology to be available to represent the epic story for today’s movie audience. With today’s 3D and visual effects breakthroughs, audiences will experience this story and time period in ways never possible before.

christian bale, aaron paul, sir ben kingsley EXODUS GODS AND KINGS

Aaron Paul was fresh from his triumph on the critically lauded TV show “Breaking Bad” when Ridley Scott came calling to ask if was interested in joining a stellar cast for the director’s epic adventure, “Exodus: Gods & Kings.” Paul plays Joshua a former slave who joins Moses – played by Christian Bale – as he leads the Israelites out of enslavement in Egypt to freedom. Exodus: Gods & Kings was filmed at Pinewood Studios in London and on location in Almeria, Spain and on Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, where some of the key scenes, including the parting of the Red Sea, were created.

“It didn’t take long for me to say ‘yes, please..’” Paul laughs. “I think it must have taken about a second…” Paul reveals that he didn’t actually meet Scott until his first day on set in Spain but embraced the chance to work with one of the best filmmakers in the business. He wasn’t disappointed. “It’s been an incredible, wild ride every single day. You can see from the scenes that we are shooting today that it’s epic and it’s been like that every single day,” he said during a break in filming on Fuerteventura.

Paul further enthuses on working with Scott, “And Ridley comes to set every day with a smile on his face and he is just so calm – I would be panicked the entire time if I was in charge of a huge production like this – but he just knows what he is doing with every single shot. It’s been awesome.”

On meeting the character of Moses, Paul shares that the first time he sees Moses is actually that scene when his character is being whipped and Moses rides by and sees what’s happening. “Moses is a general and with Ramses at that point. Joshua tends to stay away from those types of people because it’s not appropriate to approach them or talk to them or even make eye contact with them. You just kind of keep your world separate,” relates Paul on one of the most unforgettable scenes in the movie.

The movie event of the year is about to happen when “Exodus: Gods and Kings” opens in Philippine cinemas December 5 from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Great things come in miniature buns at Slammin’ Mini Burgers + Fries + Dips

A good burger is an experience that needs to be shared, but unfortunately, attempting to do so often means having a mess on your hands. But if you’re at a burger joint with friends and family, how do you let everyone try what you’re enjoying—and get a couple of bites of what they’re having in return? Slammin’ Mini Burgers + Fries + Dips has come up with the solution: serve two or three smaller-sized burgers per order!

Slammin’ Mini Burgers got its start when Slammin’ president Patrick Dy and his partners decided to take their existing brand, Slammer Burgers, in a new direction. “We changed our whole culture, look and logo. Totally revamped and upgraded our menu. The main reason for the change is for Slammin’ to eventually become the number one mini burger concept in Asia.”

         AllAmericanSlider_Double SlamminTrio

And of course, it’s the food that will drive this goal. The restaurant’s motto is, “Every bite is Slammin’,” and from their roster of bestsellers, it’s easy to see how their mini burgers live up to the hype. The All American Slider (P145, double/P215, triple) is the hands-down best-selling dish; its juicy beef patties are “onions steam grilled” to perfection then topped with melted cheese and placed on pillowy soft steamed buns. Keep things simple with the Slammin’ Cheese (P125, double/P185, triple), a delicious mini cheeseburger, and the ever-popular Bacon Mushroom Melt (P175, double/P255, triple). All three burgers contain patties made with 100% all-beef chuck. Sample all three with the Slammin’ Trio (P225), or try The Farm (P215), which gives you a Slammin’ Cheese beef miniburger, Beer-Battered Go Fish! with Sour Cream, and Crispy Chicks with Barbecue Sauce.

Want something more adventurous? Slammin’s Black Box Creations (P185, double/P265, triple) are limited-edition mini burgers made with extraordinary ingredients—and they’re only on the menu for six months. Here’s what’s currently available: the John Candy topped with salted caramel, sautéed onions, melted cheddar, and bacon; the Romeo and Juliet with bacon, melted cheese, strawberry jam, and salted butter; and The Big Kahuna with pineapple chunks, sriracha mayo, teriyaki glaze, melted cheddar, and bacon. And once you’ve eaten your fill of these, come back in a few months to try the new offerings!

               Fries_BigDipper   LoadedFries_MightyBaconMushroom

Looking for something to pair with your mini burgers? Slammin’s Loaded Fries (P125), which a large serving of thick-cut fries covered with toppings, is a must-try. You can choose between the Mighty Mushroom Bacon, topped with sour cream and cheese sauce, crispy bacon, button mushrooms, fresh tomatoes, and sautéed onions; or the Beefy Supreme with ground chuck, roasted garlic and cheese sauce, fresh tomatoes, and sautéed onion strings.

Apart from these, there are what the restaurant calls Sidekicks—great add-ons or alternatives to their menu’s “heroes.” Slammin’ Wings (P175) are tossed in either the mildly hot and tangy Buffalo-style sauce or the sweeter Honey Glazed sauce and served with a dip of your choice. Another option would be the Beer-Battered Fish and Chips (P185), with soft and delectable fish coated in Slammin’s Signature Beer Batter and deep fried to a crispy, perfect golden brown. This is paired with thick-cut and crispy fries and a large-sized dip of your choice.

The menu at Slammin’ Mini Burgers may be simple, but it’s filled with sure winners, the better to guarantee that every bite is indeed “slammin.’” Says Dy, “Our main aim is to provide a delicious and excitingly fun casual dining experience, where customers enjoy the food and each other’s company.  Site 146, CLA Studio IMG_5564.jpg A team of U.S. archaeologists is about to get more than it bargained for when it discovers a lost pyramid unlike any other in the Egyptian desert. As they unlock the terrifying secrets buried within, they realize they aren't just trapped; they are being hunted in “The Pyramid.”

The ancient wonders of the world have long cursed explorers who've dared to uncover their secrets. Most notable among afflictions is the so-called “Curse of the Pharaohs” – vengeance against adventurers who disturb the sacred tombs of the pyramids. For Dr. Nora Holden (Ashley Hinshaw) and her father Miles (Denis O’Hare) it might be the most important discovery of their careers. Using NASA satellite imaging technology, they have uncovered the first three-sided Egyptian pyramid buried deep under the desert for over 5,000 years. Followed by documentarian Sunni Marshe (Christa Nicola) and her cameraman Terrence “Fitzie” Fitzsimmons (James Buckley), and with the help of robotics expert Michael Zahir (Amir Kamyab), the team is determined to explore the foreboding structure.

But with political protests raging in nearby Cairo, the security of the expedition can’t be guaranteed and the site’s officials order an immediate evacuation. Desperate to take what might be their last chance to venture inside the pyramid, the team goes in alone. But what they find in the dark will test them all to their breaking point.

Egyptology was a topic that had always fascinated THE PYRAMID producer Scott C. Silver. He even had a dedicated Google Alerts feed set up to monitor news in the surprisingly fast-moving world of archeology. It was late in May 2011 when he first heard about the use of satellite technology to survey Egypt and the subsequent discovery of 17 lost pyramids. “It set my mind racing to come up with the idea for THE PYRAMID,” Silver notes.

The use of this technology, he felt, could reveal an unexplored environment on a scale that archeology hadn’t achieved to date. Silver imagined a team of archeologists venturing into the dark and discovering the horrors within.

He brought the idea to his producing partner Chady Eli Mattar. The pair had founded Silvatar Media after graduating from the prestigious American Film Institute Conservatory. “I’m drawn to sociological and psychological drama,” Mattar says, “so I was attracted to Scott’s idea, which included elements of the political upheavals that were going on at the time in Egypt. It added another dimension to the story.”

The two producers brought the project to veteran producer and former studio executive Mark Canton and his company, Atmosphere Entertainment MM, with whom they had previously collaborated. “When Mark got involved, and when we subsequently brought the project to Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur, with whom Mark had worked on “Piranha 3D,” “The Pyramid” became larger in scope,” Mattar remembers.

“I, too, liked the idea of the historical reality to the story,” says Canton. “Egypt is one of the oldest civilizations on Earth and its history is so fascinating.” “Alexandre loved the story and had strong ideas about where to take it,” he adds.

“A movie like this only works when you have a strong starting point,” notes Aja. “I liked the idea of using this new technology to find a lost civilization because it felt so real. It was a chance to explore a clash between the old and new school of archeology.”

Unlocking the terror within, “The Pyramid” opens December 10 in cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR_private skipper kowalski rico

Get ready for a thrilling rollercoaster ride with the world-renowned spy penguins – Skipper, Rico, Kowalski and Private in “Penguins of Madagascar.” The Penguins’ transition from beloved supporting characters in “Madagascar” to headlining their own big screen epic was a no-brainer, thanks to their memorable traits.

“What drives the Penguins in all the films are their distinct and strong personalities,” says director Eric Darnell. Adds director Simon J. Smith: “They’re like a band of brothers who above all value their friendship, moral code and love for one another.” Most importantly, the Penguins really bring the funny. “The most exciting thing about the project was to experience the story’s and characters’ humor,” says producer Mark Swift. “They’re so appealing because they are so hilarious.”

There’s Skipper, voiced by Tom McGrath, who created the characters for the blockbuster animated feature “Madagascar,” which he helmed, along with Darnell. McGrath’s Skipper is the team’s fearless leader and keeper of the Penguin code. He demands loyalty, obedience and order from his regimented flock, and asks nothing of his men that he wouldn’t do himself. His right-flipper man, Kowalski, voiced by DreamWorks animator Chris Miller, is the brains of the operation, and the go-to guy when the Penguins need a quick, life-saving fix.

The third member of the team, Rico, is “voiced” by DreamWorks Animation artist and Madagascar 3 director Conrad Vernon. Rico lives to blow things up. When he’s kept on a tight leash, Rico is an effective weapon, but left to his own devices is a loose cannon. Finally, there’s Private, voiced by DreamWorks Animation editor Christopher Knights; although he is the runt of the team, Private has the biggest heart of them all. Private is always up for new challenges, but because the group still sees him as the “baby,” he’s often sidelined during their missions.

Each of the Penguins makes a memorable impression, and collectively, they’re a force to be reckoned with. “The sum of the Penguins is greater than the parts,” says Darnell. “The guys work incredibly well as a group – far better than they would as individuals. They’re like four parts of a complete brain: You’ve got Skipper’s leadership, Private’s heart, Kowalski’s smarts, and Rico’s courage. So the four of them make this whole, and that makes them a lot of fun.”

In fact, the Penguins are very much in the tradition of great movie teams, notes McGrath, like The A-Team, The Dirty Dozen, “Star Trek’s” Kirk and Spock, and even The Marx Brothers. “They’re these huge personalities in a tiny package,” he says. “And like many great screen teams, the Penguins are taken out of their comfort zone. They embark on a globetrotting adventure, where they meet characters who really make the Penguins step up their game.”

Their inextricable bonds and unforgettable antics are on full display when we discover the origins of the Penguins in the film’s opening sequences, set in Antarctica’s icy wasteland. Right off the bat, we’re aware that these are not your typical penguins. Skipper, Kowalski and Rico are marching to the beat of a different drummer, avoiding the documentary-film tropes of penguins waddling across the icy tundra and triggering audience exclamations of “aren’t they cute!”

A DreamWorks Animation feature presentation, “Penguins of Madagascar” opens November 26 in 2D, 3D and IMAx format from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

1SHT_LAWRENCE_HOUSE-OF_100828_f.indd An animated full-feature film, “The House of Magic” is based on an attraction film that was seen and experienced around a decade ago. Ben Stassen, known for his wonders in animation production adapts the attraction film into a full-feature film – an attraction film is a 4D film that lasts 10-15 minutes.

Stassen, a Golden Globe nominee under Best Foreign Film category for his film “My uncle’s Legacy” is also co-founder of NWave Pictures that is considered a world leader in multiplatform digital cinema. His first feature “Fly Me To The Moon” is the first animated work that was completely produce in 3D relief.

the house of magic (1)

Stassen director and producer of the movie shares that, “In the beginning, the English title was “The Enchaunted House” (enchanted/ haunted), but the word “magic” fits better with the film because the house belongs to a magician and because the characters use magic. So we preferred to call it “The House of Magic.” And it’s not a scary film at all. Even the scene where the potential buyer for the house ends is scared and leaves the house screaming “the house is haunted!” is completely fun because the audience knows the whole thing has been orchestrated by the characters who live in the house.”

the house of magic - lawrence and thunder

There are 50 characters in “The House of Magic” where each one is drawn and entailed a lot of research. “For Thunder, we needed a young cat, somewhere between a kitten and an adult cat, so in terms of proportions, we did different tests to get the effect we wanted,” shares co-director Jeremie Degruson. “We also did sketches of the other characters, the annoying characters that we enjoyed mistreating. And for Lawrence, we looked for actors that might look like him. Initially, I was looking at Pierre Richard – I thought he was the archetypal old man with crazy gray hair. If it had been a live-action movie, Pierre Richard could have played the role,” continues Degruson.

Opening December 3 in theatres nationwide from CrystalSKy Multimedia, “The House of Magic” brings to life a unique whimsical story for the family with strong positive values and universal appeal. Rated G for General Patronage by the local censors board.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss is set to set the world anew on fire as she stands to lead their people in the highly-anticipated third installment of the blockbuster phenomenon that blazed across movie screens around the globe, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay –Part 1.”

The movie finds Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) in District 13 after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin (Julianne Moore) and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and a nation moved by her courage. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1” is directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Peter Craig and Danny Strong, from an adaptation by Suzanne Collins and produced by Nina Jacobson's Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the third in a trilogy written by Suzanne Collins that has over 65 million copies in print in the U.S. alone.

jennifer lawrence and julianne moore

The story now accelerates to new, exhilarating levels as the futuristic chronicle of Katniss Everdeen enters into  a new realm. The Games may have been obliterated for good, but the fight to survive is about to intensify. Faced with the most daunting odds - and watched by the eyes of a hopeful nation - Katniss must put into motion courage, strength and empowerment against the all-powerful Capitol. This is the moment when she realizes she has no choice but to open her wings and fully embody the Mockingjay symbol. If only to save Peeta, she must become a leader.

The story begins again as Katniss has just been rescued from the destruction of the Quarter Quell. She awakens in a shocking world she didn’t even know existed: the deep, dark underground of supposedly annihilated District 13. She quickly learns of the devastating reality she must face: District 12 has been turned to rubble; and Peeta is being held, manipulated and brainwashed by President Snow in The Capitol. At the same time, Katniss’s eyes are opened to a secret rebellion rapidly spreading from District 13 throughout all of Panem – a rebellion that will place her at the center of a daring plot to hack into The Capitol and turn the tables on President Snow.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 dives further into the fabric of Panem and into the story’s most powerful emotions as Katniss and the nation enter a harrowing but transformative time. Explains returning director Francis Lawrence: “Emotionally, Katniss is like a foreigner in a strange land as this story begins. This is the time when she realizes she can’t stand by and do nothing. There has been too much deception and the people Katniss loves are in danger. She will do whatever it takes to keep them safe.”

The director continues: “The stakes have always been high in The Hunger Games but now the entire world opens up. The Games themselves are gone, but threat of oppression now permeates all of Panem. This chapter gave us a chance to reveal entirely new locations with amazing action sequences. It’s a gigantic movie.”

In her third and most poignant turn as Katniss, Academy Award® winner Jennifer Lawrence relished the chance to portray the character at this heightened juncture as she emerges from distress to take her first steps into leadership. “I was excited for Katniss to come into her own as a leader, but she’s still a very reluctant hero,” Lawrence observes. “In the first movie she wanted to save her family. In the second, she tried to save her friends and herself. Now, she starts to realize the impact she has on the wider world and that she has a choice to lead this battle for what is right.”

That choice does not come easily for Katniss, who recoils at nearly every element of her new life: the militaristic order of District 13, the pressure to perform on cue, and the heart-wrenching reality of war. Katniss remains hopeful that becoming the Mockingjay might truly change things. “As an actor, the challenge was having Katniss wake up in a brand new environment, where she has to rebuild herself from nothing. Katniss has not only left behind her old life as a District 12 victor, she has entered a world unlike any other. Says Lawrence: “She has to get used to a new way of life in District 13. Everything is deeply unfamiliar and it’s all underground, so she can’t even go outside or hunt.”

Lawrence continues about approaching Katniss: “She felt almost like an entirely different character because she is so stripped down and feeling so empty. It’s something that truly does happen to people after 4 traumatic events like she’s been through. Katniss still has the same core, but she’s in a completely different place inside and out.”

Join the revolution when “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay –Part 1” opens November 20 in theatres across the nation (Phils.) – from Pioneer Films.

The most exciting animated characters, Skipper, Rico, Kowalski and Private are back on the big screen headlining their own film in Dreamworks Animation’s “Penguins of Madagascar.”

THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR In the latest non-stop action caper of the year, the breakout stars of DreamWorks Animation’s hit “Madagascar” movies get their own big screen comedy-adventure, in which the stakes couldn’t be higher for the Penguins. Their globetrotting adventures take them to Antarctica, Venice, the desert, Shanghai, New York City and … Kentucky), during which they experience glory, engage in espionage, foil an evil scientist’s/octopus’ dastardly plot – and devour cheesy snacks – like no penguins have ever before.

In the following q&a, the greatest spy quartet of penguins share on how it was working on the movie and working together for almost a decade.

Q: After letting Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria bask in the spotlight, how does it feel to finally be getting your own movie?

Skipper: Somebody’s filming us?! Rico, find those cameras and take them out! Pronto!

Q: Did any of them give you tips on how to handle the work and the fame?

Skipper: Who’s famous? You didn’t see anything. Next question! And I’m serious about those cameras, Rico!

Q: It looks like you again got to travel around the world making this film – what was your favorite place?

Skipper: Well, they always say there’s no place like home. But we’re from Antarctica, so forget that. Maybe Venice?

Private: We got to ride a gondola!

Skipper: We sure did, you adorable ragamuffin.

Q: It appears you’ve created quite the enemy in Dr Octavious Brine… what’s his problem?

Skipper: I know, right? Wait, was that an actual question? Oh. Ehh, who knows? I stop paying attention when villains go into the “blah blah here’s my story blah I’m so angry blah.” Wake me up when there’s something to rescue and/or eliminate.

Q: To help bring him down, you teamed up with professional spy Agent Classified. Who’s smarter?

Skipper: I’m gonna let Kowalski field this one. Say something smart, Kowalski.

Kowalsko: Covalent bonds, Planck’s constant, ziggurat, flagellum.

Skipper: I rest my case.

Q: Without giving too much away, what was the hardest part about trying to bring down the Dr?

Skipper: Well well, you’re just chock-full of questions today, aren’t you? WHO SENT YOU?! WHO ARE YOU WORKING FOR?! Rico, where are those cameras, man?!

Q: The four of you have been working together now for almost a decade – do you still get on?

Skipper: Of course! This is a brotherhood, forged in the fury of battle, and solidified over several frosty mugs of herring juice. Sure, sometimes Private gets a little gassy—

Private: I can’t believe you told him that!

Skipper: --but other than that, we’re good.

Q: You guys have always been popular – why do we love penguins so much?

Skipper: How about you stare into Private’s adorable face for 30 seconds and tell me if you still need to ask that question.

Q: Do those penguin documentaries really tell us all we need to know about you, or is there one secret you’re holding back?

Skipper: Ohhhh, yes. We’ve got one secret. A secret so big, it’ll blow your mind. Would you like to hear it? Well too bad, because Rico finally found your cameras. Take ‘em out, Rico!

Opening soon this November 26 in 2D, 3D and IMAX screens, “Penguins of Madagascar” is a Dreamworks Animation feature and 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Tom Hardy heads up a phenomenal cast in this gripping tale of crime and passion in “The Drop” from a screenplay of world-renowned crime novelist Dennis Lehane. At first glance nothing looks particularly unusual as the movie starts. But as the clientele of the bar put their hands on their hearts, Bob (Hardy) discreetly stashes an envelope of cash behind the bar. Indeed, there's more to Cousin Marv's bar than meets the eye. Cousin Marv (played by the late James Gandolfini) has been drawn into working with a group of nefarious Chechen gangsters, meaning his employee Bob has to go along with the scheme. Meanwhile, the bartender has found an abandoned pit bull puppy in a trash can, leading him to cross paths with the beautiful but troubled Nadia (Noomi Rapace) and her violent ex-boyfriend Eric (Matthias Schoenaerts). It's the set-up for an explosive, emotional drama with plenty of twists and turns.

Bob’s simple life becomes much more complicated when he discovers a battered pit bull puppy in a trash can. Turning to his neighbor Nadia (Noomi Rapace) for help, he nurses the puppy back to health, as their mutual concern for the dog sparks an unexpected attraction between them. But when Eric Deeds (Matthias Schoenaerts), the dog’s original owner and Nadia’s abusive ex-boyfriend, tries to reclaim both of them, and a robbery at the bar puts Bob in the crosshairs of the Chechen crime boss who owns it, Bob is forced to face the shocking truth about the people he thinks he knows best—including himself.

The story is, as Lehane points out, still quite simple. “A guy finds a dog. The dog allows him to reclaim a part of his life. But at the exact same moment, outside forces press in on him. The Chechen mobsters who own the bar where he works for his Cousin Marv are suspicious about a robbery. The guy who originally owned the dog wants it back and he’s not taking no for an answer.”

The film opens on the day Bob re-engages with the world he’s closed himself off from. It all starts with Rocco, the puppy. “Bob made a decision ten years ago to shut himself away from humanity, from feeling,” says Lehane. “Suddenly something begins to open up in him. He meets this woman. He starts to re-join the human race. The largest dramatic question of the film is, can Bob really be rescued?”

“Like most of the people in the film, he is chasing something that’s already in the rearview mirror,” the writer continues. “They’re trying to get back to a self that doesn’t exist anymore. That idea fascinated me as I was writing the script. I think the audience will feel an emotional connection with the characters that leads them to some sort of emotional truth about their own lives, about the moments when they seem to be stuck in gear. The people who successfully navigate those waters are the ones who will ultimately reach a happy ending.”

"This has been an intense shoot," says director Michael Roskam. "It is such a tense story, but there is also a huge amount of heart. That combination is really what made me fall in love with it." The cast and crew know that they are making something special. "It's a very beautiful story about daring to take a risk with your emotions," muses Rapace. "To let someone in, even though you have a smashed heart. Someone who has been beaten up really badly still finds a way to believe and to hope again. Through a dog!"

“The Drop” opens November 12 in cinemas nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Shailene Woodley and Christopher Meloni WHITER BIRD IN A BLIZZARD “White Bird In A Blizzard” brings together an eclectic versatile cast headed by Shailene Woodley, Eva Green, Thomas Jane, Christopher Meloni and Gabourey Sidibe based on acclaimed book of the same title by Laura Kasischke and directed by Gregg Araki that tells the story of a girl’s coming of age under unusual traumatic circumstances.

shailene woodley (center) WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD Set in the late 80’s, on the surface, Kat’s (Woodley) home life seems perfect. A normal, college-bound teenager, Kat listens to the era’s Depeche Mode, hangs out with her tragically hip pals, and is critical of her parents. She’s also having her first romance with, literally, the boy next door and is starting to feel comfortable in her own skin—all under the watchful eye of her glamorous, but disturbed, homemaker mothe, Eve (Green). When her mother mysteriously vanishes, Kat and her father suppress their emotions and try to resume their lives. Years later, Kat’s subconscious is consumed by images of her mother, whose peculiar disappearance she can’t fully comprehend.

shailene woodley WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD_Shailene Woodley, as Kat, commands the screen with the allure of a young woman embracing her sexuality and beginning to understand the power that accompanies it. Veteran filmmaker Gregg Araki uses a carefully curated soundtrack to build a tantalizing dream world and contrasts it with the stark reality of the characters who inhabit it, indicating all is not right beneath this placid façade of American suburbia.

Araki, in the following q&a further delves into the book’s theme and on adapting the novel to a film populated with today’s most talented of actors.

Q: White Bird in a Blizzard is adapted from a novel by Laura Kasischke. What made you decide to make this story into a movie?

A: A producer friend and collaborator of mine, Sebastien Lemercier, recommended the book which I read and fell in love with. I was instantly struck by the novel’s lyrical and poetic nature. It really haunted me and reminded me of what I had liked about Scott Heim’s novel Mysterious Skin: softness and beauty within the violence.

Q: What did you change in the story to make it your own?

A: Adapting the novel for the screen, I started by moving the story from Ohio to Loma Linda, California, a suburb near L.A. which is similar to the one I grew up in. It's helpful for me to have inside knowledge of a location and its atmosphere, in order to create the world of the film. The book is divided into four distinct chapters chronicling the years between 1986 to 1989, for the film we’ve shifted a bit later to the late eighties/early nineties - a period that, culturally and especially musically, has always fascinated me. As anyone familiar with my movies knows, the music of that era which is used in the film - Depeche Mode, New Order, The Cure, Cocteau Twins, etc. - that music was a huge influence and inspiration for me as a young artist, so the film pays homage to that.

Q: The narrative structure relies heavily on Kat’s dreams. How did you work with these dreams?

A: The dreams Kat has of her mother lost in the snow give us an insight into the emotional bond between them as well as illuminating what is going on inside Kat's head. My films have always been influenced by surrealism and filmmakers like David Lynch so the way Laura utilizes dreams in the book definitely appealed to me. It really gave me a pathway into the story.

Q: There are some characters, like Kat’s close friends, who seem to represent the outcasts of the world: the overweight Afro- American, the gay best friend...

A: In the book, Kat’s friends were two white girls. My movies have always been about outsiders, those who don't really fit into mainstream American society. That’s why I changed these characters as I envisioned Kat and her friends as misfits who create a world unto themselves. They are perfectly content living outside of the norm, apart from the middle of the road "popular" kids, because they have each other.

Q: Kat is played by Shailene Woodley who has recently achieved international stardom as the heroine in the teenage saga Divergent (Neil Burger – 2014). Was this iconic element helpful to you?

A: I first discovered Shai through her heartbreaking performance in The Descendants (Alexander Payne – 2011). Coincidentally, she was a big fan of Mysterious Skin and I've known her manager, Nils Larsen, for years. He insisted that I meet Shai and we hit it off instantly. This was years before Divergent came along. She read the script for White Bird, loved it, and immediately signed on. Shai actually reminds me a lot of Joe Gordon Levitt, who I worked with on Mysterious Skin. They are both incredibly talented and creative individuals who take their art very seriously - they're not in it for fame or money or any of the bullshit. They both also have really great parents so they're more centered and secure in themselves than some young actors who don't have that kind of solid upbringing.

Pinoeer Films presents “White Bird In A Blizzard” that will open November 12 in cinemas nationwide.
