Two brothers face the fight of a lifetime - and the wreckage of their broken family - within the brutal, high-stakes world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighting in Lionsgate's action/drama, WARRIOR. An ex-Marine haunted by a tragic past, Tommy Riordan returns to his hometown of Pittsburgh and enlists his father, a recovered alcoholic and his former coach, to train him for an MMA tournament awarding the biggest purse in the history of the sport. As Tommy blazes a violent path towards the title prize, his brother, Brendan, a former MMA fighter unable to make ends meet as a public school teacher, returns to the amateur ring to provide for his family. Even though years have passed, recriminations and past betrayals keep Brendan bitterly estranged from both Tommy and his father. But when Brendan's unlikely rise as an underdog sets him on a collision course with Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront the forces that tore them apart, all the while waging the most intense, winner-takes-all battle of their lives.
ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
What Do You Fight For ?
That is the central question of director Gavin O’ Connor’s WARRIOR. The movie is an intense glimpse into the world of sport never before shown like this on film. More than that though, its an intense glimpse into a family’s journey from brokenness to reparation, and into the hearts of two brother’s- one fighting for his country while the other for his family- both tapping into immense stores of vigor and courage.
WARRIOR thrives on the jusxtaposition of its portrayal of something as contemporary, infectious, and specific as the phenomenon that is mixed martial arts with a story that is thoroughly classic, a story of family. In fact mano-a-mano chronicles of estranged brothers confronting one another are one of the oldest themes in literature, and telling one in such a fresh setting was O’Connor’s primary inspiration for making the film. While the movie was indeed an opportunity for him to realistically dramatized a not-yet-mainstream sport with a major mystique, the story is really for and about “people who live warrior lives”, - everyday heroes fighting everyman fights for better opportunities and better relationships.
The movie has a touch of Asian culture wherein family incidents occurs and it so happen that one of the most acclaimed fighter is in Asia which is here in the Philippines. A fighter that both fought the fight one for his country and the other for his family. It is an action film that has its Western style which is Mixed Martial Arts but not quite acceptable in the field of Olympic sports. But somehow showed that poverty may stretch a person to be successful in life no matter what it takes. And in the end there is always reconciliation with regards to family enmity such as brothers who somehow does not understand their father because of some addiction and wayward lifestyle and both strive to survived in the name of their family and the other career and society.
